GW........... [Mr. Buckeye] - 05:41pm Mar 19, 2001 EST (#1 of 400)

This is kind of unexpected.

This board is a way of life for me....an online community that keeps me company during the work day.

I'm really gonna miss this place.

When did you first show up GW? I think I was about number 46 poster back in early 96.

GW........... [Mr. Buckeye] - 05:44pm Mar 19, 2001 EST (#4 of 400)

Mark: I found this place sometime in '95....

I don't remember exactly when.

I've seen a lot of history come through here.......

[Sacerdotal] - 05:49pm Mar 19, 2001 EST (#5 of 400)

It was a long time coming, but I think most of knew it couldn't last in it's present form.

Not much politics here, and a lot of socializing.

But, we will miss those Personal Attacks.

Some of them took a great deal of thought.

GW..it really is sad. These boards have become a part of many of us. I came here shortly after you did, I think, in late
1995, right before the elections. I've posted here regularly, ever since. I am going to miss everyone who posts here,
even those with whom I've had disagreements. This is too sad.

[Talooga] - 06:02pm Mar 19, 2001 EST (#13 of 400)

It has been a good experience for me. Before I came here, I really couldn't TYPE. LOL, some of the stuff I saw here,
compelled me to become proficient on the keyboard.

I have learned a great deal about how people feel, and why I may not feel the same way. I have learned that there are
ways for people to disagree, and not try to destroy one another. I have also learned, that some people enjoy attacking
others, for reasons that are not always clear.

The most important thing I have learned, is that as powerful as the pen (or keyboard) is, the actions or acts people
perform, are (by far) the most powerful. In many cases, the actions which took place in our society, lead to some very
good discussions here on Pathfinder.

There is no doubt in my mind, that another company WILL fill the void which this board leaves. I'm sure a few
political types have been here, who like this sounding board or forum. The feedback here is not scientific, but it was
a rather interesting cross-section of opinions which were expressed.

Peace to you all in Jesus Christ, and for those who have an aversion to that, may good luck follow you in future days.

Regards, Talooga (aka SHAH).

Deja Moo! I've heard THAT Bull before. [TallTimber] - 06:02pm Mar 19, 2001 EST (#14 of 400)

[FAUFORDE] - 06:05pm Mar 19, 2001 EST (#15 of 400)

This whole place has just been a part of my online life for so long, I've taken it for granted.

I, too, will miss EVERYONE. Even the irritating ones, the ones I disagree with. If it weren't for them, I probably
wouldn't be here.

GW...yes, we are addicts! LOL I'm sure we'll all find other places to post, but it just won't be the same.

Birdz, I don't have a basement. lol (Gosh, is that how you get a life? Get a basement? I'll have to look into that. lol)

Fauforde...agreed, it was in large part the "irritating ones" that kept me coming back. ;-)

[FAUFORDE] - 06:16pm Mar 19, 2001 EST (#18 of 400)

I'm gonna miss Panama Hank's devastating wit.

I've always thought Hank had one of the sharpest sense of humors on here. I really do. Doesn't mean I take his side on
much, tho.

[La Lil'One] - 06:20pm Mar 19, 2001 EST (#19 of 400)

Well, this is fascinating to say the least.

I doubt we will see anthing like this board again, mainly becuase of the political diversity here as well as the format.
I doubt I will follow anyone to another board as I dont think this online community can ever be reproduced.

I guess Im fortunate to follow the board through a major presdintial campaign...Twillards polling report and related
links was fascinating to follow, as where the debate play-by-play and postmortems. I also liked some of the more
issue-specific debates.

In a way I became a little more sophisticated politically by reading and posting, and have clarified my politics via the
discussions here. I think Ive moved more to the right while being here, and also see more clearly some of the
political threats I'm facing

The social aspect & online personas where fascinating...folks like OJ (of course), Ken Stammerman, Mr Buckeye/GW,
Ferret Mike, Hayek, Panama Hank, DaveGin, McDuffy, and others (all of you, actually)...thanks for sharing. It's been a
fun three years or so

[EFI] - 06:21pm Mar 19, 2001 EST (#20 of 400)

There are lots of other boards to post on, but PLEASE don't screw them up like this one was.

There are many sites that would die for the opportunity that this board squandered. The name of the game is
numbers, and this board was so hostile and inbred, that the numbers actually decreased over time.

Try not to do that to any new sites you find. You might want to change your handles as well. This board has a bad
reputation in general on the other boards.

Dance as if no one were watching [~Libby~] - 06:21pm Mar 19, 2001 EST (#21 of 400)

Hank, has a great wit. So do you, Fauforde. But one of the people who consistently cracks me up is Blue Lime. That man
is amazing with the words.

I'm going to miss soooo many of you, I hestitate to even start naming names.

But Shah...you are one of the ones from whom I learned so much. We went down many paths together. I loved every
minute of it. You are a dear, sweet person and I'll never forget you.

mainstay of the board, starting with the RR.

GW........... [Mr. Buckeye] - 06:30pm Mar 19, 2001 EST (#24 of 400)

Libby: The amazing thing to me is how my political thinking evolved as a result of the discussions here.

If you remember, I was a bedrock conservative when I came here.

And now, I'm a liberal on abortion, and the death penalty, and I've modified my position on so many other issues.

Interacting on this board has changed me, a lot.

I wonder how many others have found that, also......

I've been posting on political boards for over 4 years now, ever since I first got a PC. It's probably time to get a new
'puter. LOL ! I've been here for 4 years this month.

I remember watching more TV and hanging out in the bars on weekends. In a sense I've matured in the four years
I've been here (though you'd probably never know it from some of the things I say LOL!). Just from being a little
older I'm not particularly interested in going to bars anymore.

I suppose I'll eventually find another board where I'm comfortable. I didn't post here a lot when ThePeopleSpeak was
at its peak.

It'll probably take some time before I find one though.

Again, I hope to see many of you someplace else.

My email address is sirchris@penn.com as I'm open to suggestions.

Libby,

Like I said in the long ass email I just sent you (lol) You and Kari have been my best friends for a while now. Thanks.
For everything. We've all been through a lot of 'stuff' and I'm glad I always had you 2 to talk to and to cry to and to
lean on. You've been like 'motherly sisters' to me. lol And I love you both. Of course, I will always keep in touch. I talk
to you guys more in email anyhow. :-) I hope I get the chance to meet you 2 one day.

And thanks to the others who were always polite and respectful to me. Susan first comes to mind. That is something
that sticks in my mind and I have to thank you for it. I remember long ago you told me why you felt it was always
important to be respectful to others..and I never forgot that. So... thanks. You're a great lady. :-) I also enjoyed several
others. Their wit and their humor. I loved reading Linguist. So, if you're reading Linguist, I say 'hey' :-)

And my politics -- I've sure learned a damn lot. I wasn't even interested in politics when I first came in June of 99
when I was 20. I've certainly learned and researched a great amount of information (social issues and political issues)
the past couple of years.

Ya know, back in my dice throwing ghetto days, I never allowed certain spectators to stand behind me as I "rolled

Does anyone get the feeling, that a certain hill billy spectator living at 1600 Pennsylvannia Ave, Washington D.C. has
brought all of us, and this country, a whole lot of bad luck.

Wow, this is sad news.

I found this site sometime in 1997. I lurked for a couple of years before raising havoc with the Liberals. I'm going to
miss that. I'm even going to miss Bill.

This is a shocker. And just when I was starting to find a home here. Hope they find a way to keep it alive in something
resembling its current form.

Trying to understand the move still. With Time-Warner-AOL being one of the biggest entities on the planet now, how
much of an investment is it to have the forums running a single (?) server, and a couple of people staffing? Maybe I
don't grasp the infrastructure involved... I will peruse the other posts, maybe Dave has spelled these details out
somewhere.

It has been a good experience for me. Before I came here, I really couldn't TYPE. LOL, some of the stuff
I saw here, compelled me to become proficient on the keyboard.

LOL, that's funny. I'm glad you did because I've enjoyed your posts.

I have learned a great deal about how people feel, and why I may not feel the same way. I have learned
that there are ways for people to disagree, and not try to destroy one another.

You were always so polite and I admired that.

I have also learned, that some people enjoy attacking others, for reasons that are not always clear.

Yep...

The most important thing I have learned, is that as powerful as the pen (or keyboard) is, the actions or
acts people perform, are (by far) the most powerful. In many cases, the actions which took place in
our society, lead to some very good discussions here on Pathfinder.

There is no doubt in my mind, that another company WILL fill the void which this board leaves. I'm
sure a few political types have been here, who like this sounding board or forum. The feedback here is
not scientific, but it was a rather interesting cross-section of opinions which were expressed.

Peace to you all in Jesus Christ, and for those who have an aversion to that, may good luck follow you
in future days.

Regards, Talooga (aka SHAH).

Peace to you too Shah. I've learned a lot from you. You, along with Linguist, are one of my favorite posters. Thanks
and good luck to you as well.

Oh, guys. I think I'm going to cry! Thanks, Duffy.

I guess for reminiscing purposes, I want to thank all of you, everyone, who was so supportive of me when I was going
through infertility, then my pregnancy, then their shaky birth! That is my fondest memory, the love and support I
received from every political corner. That was so important to me.

I really am going to miss here. I took this place for granted! I disappeared for awhile when i was on my maternity
leave, and was so psyched to let you know if I was going for postgraduate work to Europe. I even had a thread title,
"Greenie's ExPatriot Party!" LOL

[Duffy] - 10:00pm Mar 19, 2001 EST (#105 of 400)

Primo,

I had to think about that. I started a thread called "The Beauty Myth" last year. I found some of the intro.

Comments about "The Beauty Myth"

'This is for women who believe their thighs are too big, their breasts are too small, their hair is
boring, their skin is flawed, their body is shaped funny, or their clothes are outdated. This month's
column is for women who believe their life would improve if they could lose 15 pounds; if they
could afford contact lenses, that new perfume or anti-cellulite concoction; if they got a nose job, a
face lift, a tummy tuck, etc. This is for women who feel shame or unhappiness when they ponder
some part (or all) of their body. In other words, this is for 99.9% of the women reading it!

Why is it that so many women feel they just don't measure up when it comes to their looks? ...

The issue she is bringing to our attention needs to be addressed by both sexes, for women are not
the only ones being manipulated by the media into feeling insecure and unhappy with themselves.
This book will hopefully spark more discussion and research on how our culture cultivates the
stereotypes of women as sex objects and men as success objects, to the detriment of all of us.'

How harmful can the pursuit of good looks and sexiness be?

I did mention my surgery there. It was only approved because it was considered a 'medical
necessity' but it was also for cosmetic reasons. I think most women who've had that surgery
approved as a 'medical necessity' would agree it's partly for cosmetic reasons.

I will miss all of you, really!!! [BrujaVerde] - 10:04pm Mar 19, 2001 EST (#106 of 400)

That was a good thread, Duffy.

I am thinking about so many good threads! There was a time when we had a battle for cyberparties here. I remember
dancing with Duh in a long red dress, and having a Halloween party with Armyman, Bricklayer, and Kadien. And I
drew a cheesy picture for OJ, Sherrie, Kadian, and Ol Perf., about our "ship o0f liberal destruction."

Those were good times! I think I even remember when then when the Rumpus Room was started. It was in response to
the "Liberal Laff Lounge," (where Dusty and I were dancing) which didn't last!

Typical left-wing disorganization. LOL!

I will miss all of you, really!!! [BrujaVerde] - 10:06pm Mar 19, 2001 EST (#107 of 400)

I remember teaching GWashington how to recognize humor back in 1996 (sigh). Prior to that, he was absolutely
flummoxed by anything remotely funky.

Back then; my handle was "EC". Oregon Jim and I were big on references to Phyllis Schlafly and Ralph Reed.
Dittophile was Rush Limbaugh’s lover and Top Ten lists ruled the day.

I slowly explained to GW the meaning and purpose of things like irony and sarcasm, et cetera.

Jump to a few months ago. The first day I came back to Pathfinder I found old Gwash giving someone the same lecture
I gave him five years earlier. The tears welled up in my eyes as I realized that I had touched someone’s life in such an
important way.

"My little Gwashington is all grown up now." I said.

just plain weird...whatever. (I just stumbled into this place to start with.) But I don't know that I can....or maybe I'm
just too old to start over again.

But I'd come here and at least read when I was feelin' a bit blue, or feel a bit of the hermit coming on. I was like

Liz...nice to see you...a lot of memories, eh? *sigh* I remember the "Ellen" thread..it was a good one! I
also remember when you were starting about four or five highly controversial threads almost
everyday! Those were the good times. *G*

Yeah, a lot of memories. My favorites are the ones with good friends, and the ones where I learned to respect someone
I previously disliked. It was a good place in its heyday.

My house is available.

Plenty of room, cheery atmosphere in a quite cul-de-sac; a fully stocked bar, a fish pond for sitting near in the
evenings, listening to the water falling while sipping wine or scotch, smoking fine cigars and laughing about
nothing, laughing about everything, all the while playing in the background is fine 70s rock.

I predicted this about 2 months ago... remember when I asked 'where will we go?" (ElP)

Yep. I suspected it was coming by then as well. Once EW went, the other TW boards were likely to follow. No free
lunches, that's one thing Freidman was right about.

All your base are belong to us. [Ken Stammerman] - 01:18am Mar 20, 2001 EST (#149 of 400)

I know me and Ken Stammerman used to post on Louisville.com, but I dropped after they became
dominated by flamey right wingers, lost their moderator, and they changed their format.(LLO)

Likewise.

A small outfit like Louisville.com does not have the resources to maintain full-time sysops to block the rightie flames
which disrupt so many online boards. I left that place after gunnies (Kentucky is full of them) started wishing gun
violence on my family. Since I am one of the early adaptors who uses his real name, those guys knew where I lived.

A larger organization like AOL/TW, OTOH, tends to have hierarchies which measure each corporate activity against
the bottom line. That's their strength and their weakness.

For me, the MOST interesting topics on the Politics threads have been about MUSIC!!!

There are so many knowledgeable people here! I especially enjoyed the "Jazz" thread and the "Napster" thread! Plus, it
gave me and others a chance to put away the labels RWW and LWW. Just lovers of music--the best kind of people!

Yes, I have learned a lot from the political threads and made some friends along the way. I also enjoyed Red's "Night

Thoughts from a newbie - I found this board in 2000:

Go to a coffee shop, corner bar or barber shop and you'll often see a group of retired men sitting around jawing
comfortably with each other about the issues of the day. Sometimes the conversation focuses on serious political
policy, sometimes on whether the Reds shoulda paid so much for so-and-so.

Where in non-net life we're separated by geography, gender, sexual orientation, etc., here we can all pull up a chair
and join the conversation. The women aren't subtly segregated to the beauty parlor gossip, a guy who doesn't follow
sports doesn't have to bluff it just to fit in with the other guys in the office. To this day I don't know whether La Lil
One is a man or a woman, but I sure had fun on his/her Halloween thread and funny posts about being stuck in
Dayton. :->

Crimson writes:

But I'd come here and at least read when I was feelin' a bit blue, or feel a bit of the hermit coming on. I was like
reading one loooong continual book with such a great cast of characters.

Last night, lying in bed, I was thinking about this place, and thought the same thing. This place was/is like a good
book you don't want to put down.

You love all the characters, good/evil, antagonist/protagonist, you follow the plot lines, the sub plots. Some of them
keep your interest and some aren't as interesting.

And when you reach the last page, where it says "The End", you're a little sad for having to leave all those charaters
and all their "humanism".

And that's how I feel. Like I'm very near the end of a really great book that I don't want to end.

Another possibility. It DOES have a nice News Feed link section built in. You can join or start an "open" board, or you
can join or start a "limited" board. Here is an Open Board that was started, but which has no discussion yet. It doesn't
have the traffic you can generate at a place like this, or CNN, etc...

This place and reading fiction are my two primary sources of entertainment, especially in the winters like this past
one in NH.

I've read some of the most humerous exchanges and one liners in these threads. They would make a sell-out routine
for a stand-up comic.

My thanks to many who have contributed to my education over the past 5-6 years. While I've disagreed with some on
various issues, that disagreement forced me to do research and become somewhat more enlightened than I was when
I started out here.

Someone mentioned that being here was like sitting around with a group of friends and acquaintances and discussing
the issue of the moment. I couldn't have stated it better.

I've often wondered. I'll be 73 come April 28. Am I the 'senior citizen'?

I've been saving the e-mail and site links that have been posted thus far and have the fond hope that I'll meet you all

I guess Mike is right, AOL is trying to herd us somewhere else.

sniff* But it won't ever be the same. You can't create a community that easily, it took a long time to be what we are
over here.

Even though this last election totally sucked, and seemed to bring out the worse in everyone, and Russell is so proud
that his efforts to destroy everyone's fun have met with such stellar success, I still think this place had a "small town"
quality, that made me feel that, even if I was away for awhile, I could come back here to find my friends.

I guess Mike is right, AOL is trying to herd us somewhere else.

There's no doubt in my mind that the new Time-Warner-AOL entity wants to slim down their operations, and since
AOL already has a large established message board system populated by paying customers the obvious thing to do is
get rid of the freebie message board supported by shrinking advertising revenue. And, no doubt, they would love to
herd us all into becoming paying AOL users.

This is sad. For me, this board has been the one constant over the last 7 years or so, in a online world filled with
constant changes.

I am trying to remember the very first time I posted here, and how I even stumbled across this board....to be honest, I
can't. All I can remember is lots and lots of arguements, going all the way back to "Mel". Boy, he was a treat. ;)

I believe I first found this board back sometime around the '94 midterm elections. I could be wrong, but, it was
sometime around then.

These boards were especially meaningful to me when I was coming to grips with my sexuality. I stumbled onto these
boards right about the same time I was going through my "coming out" process. It allowed me a chance to write out
my thoughts and feelings during a time when many of my thoughts and feelings were a big jumbled mess.

Writing, for me, has always been the best way for me to get my thoughts straight and to think through an issue.
These boards gave me an entertaining way to do that. I will miss that.

I consider myself of the "old-timer" group here. There are a good handful of us still around. Those are the folks I've
gotten used to seeing and agreeing with or battling with over the years. Those will be the folks I miss.

These boards have been a great way for me to think through my positions on a whole range of issues, and many times
to force myself to REthink my positions on a whole range of issues. Since 1994, and due in part to these baords, my
beliefs and thoughts have changed. Probably more to me getting older than anything else, but I came in here a
20something year old idealistic liberal, and I leave a 36 yr old somewhat jaded, somewhat more conservative liberal. I
know, I know, conservatives pick yourself up the floor and stop laughing. ;) But, it is true.

I'm still a big flaming liberal at heart, but, some of that wide-eyed liberalism has been beaten out of me by life and
experience. But, at the same time, life and experience has also taught me, if you allow yourself to get too jaded, and let
life beat you down too much, what you are left with is a conservative.

We still have several days to go, and I'm sure many more arguements to get through, but just let me take a sec to tell
everyone I wish them the best, and to thank Dave and the guy before him (what was his name...Mark???) for keeping
this insane asylum from going too insane.

Rob, indeed you are an "old-timer." And I've always admired your positions, and your convictions.

This is a sad day indeed, we've fought some good battle together. I remember when we had 20 or so threads devoted to
gay-bashing and you were one of the Champions!!

I must have lived a sheltered life - prior to arriving on this board I was not aware that so many people were that
concerned about how other folks expressed their interest in others - I just found/find it bizarre.

I'm hoping that the homophobic element witnessed around here is a minority view.

[BillCostley] - 11:56am Mar 20, 2001 EST (#214 of 400)

{re:#207} I'll definitely miss U [RobNY34] Don't apologize about your liberalism's evolving; everyone's does
acc2their reactions2events. How U vote in 2002/4 will matter as much/more than what U wrote here for/against
others who weren't changed all that much.

[Bobbyc] - 11:57am Mar 20, 2001 EST (#215 of 400)

This was not what I was expecting when I got home form work.

I really did have visions of saving some of our misguided friends from the errors of their ways - but I thought I had a
little more time.

Things have a way of correcting themselves - perhaps even before Dave and Time turn out the lights.

I predict that eventually Hillary will straighten out Bill and he will spend the rest of his career singing the National
Anthem at sporting events as a soprano.

I also predict that we will discover that GW really lost the election but how in the world do you fix that?

I find it interesting that the Christian Right is probably responsible for electing Bush based on their stand on Pro
Life. Yet the Left, with the exception of abortion, is probably closer to traditional Christian values in terms of charity
and forgiveness. (70 X 7 and turn the other cheek doesn't seem to support the death penalty or maintaining an
personal arsenal just in case :-)

I think we owe a special thanks to DUH and her picture emporium - who would have ever guessed that we looked like
that?

Yes, rob, I remain *furious* at you, but this time it's for ignoring "my" thread (the Memories Light the Corner of My

much cuter than me and I am hurt and emotionally depressed about the whole thang (especially when I haven't

CHECK THIS OUT!

Hi folks! Some of us are going to the Boomers International Board! You might check it out. There
are a variety of topics and I am sure you don't have to be a Baby Boomer to post there.
Unfortunately, Jeri was kicked off the Board yesterday, but there is a Politics Board. I will try to
link this.

Well pan rhea or diarrhea or whatever.

I'd just about completed my post-election recovery when they shut the sucker down.

At it's best, this board reminded me of John Dos Passos's USA Trilogy--but even that came to an end.

The difference between this board and any other I've seen was the wide variety of opinions and the balance between
freedom and control.

I'll miss it.

If I don't see y'all around the boards, then it's someday at El Rancho de Suenos.

robny34: It's been a pleasure interacting with you all these years.

We've been on opposite sides of a lot of issues, and on the same side of a number of issues.

And we've had some good interchanges on the sports threads.

My style in recent years has been confrontational and inflammatory, and I think I've gotten you going a few times.

I don't know if you remember, but I used to be the genial host of the Rumpus Room, and I'd abstain from the political
wars and be strictly neutral.

But over time, I found that my true calling was partisan politics, so I abandoned the Rumpus Room, eventually selling
it to Guy Montag. (I burned him on the price....Don't tell him.)

Does anyone remember when I was the genial, non-partisan innkeeper? It seems so long ago.....

Bucky - If you don't mind -- I liked you better as a genial conservative.

When I was still just lurking, it was about the time leading up to the Clinton impeachment. Some of your remarks had
me LOLing so hard. The most memorable one was something you said about the Clinton (would you believe I almost
typed that "Clingon?" Freudian slip, no doubt) encounter with Paula Jones. You said something like he was "dangling
the gubernatorial salami."

That was a classic.

My (sexy) buddy! Thanks for being such a great friend. Such an interesting guy. I remember some
of the stories you told around the time I first met you on the boards. One was on a thread called
"RACIST AMERICA". You probably don't remember it. That is when I started joking around with you
about going on a honeymoon and all that other flirty stuff. LOL It was after you told one of those
sad 'break up' stories. You had all these interesting stories. (I remember one about a female
roommate you had) I had never had so much fun on the boards before. (Sundance=fun) LOL I also
admired your passion about politics and social issues. (The Dems take back power in 2004) I've
learned a lot from you as well over the past year. That Mariah Carey song "Anytime you need a
friend..." comes to mind. (for all of my online buddies) I hope I haven't made you blush too much.
Ok, I'm lying. I hope I made you blush. :-)

Also, thanks for all of the dating/romance advice. If you have any more PLEASE send it my way. LOL
You know how shy and scared I am. I think I let this one (dashing) guy slip past me and now I’m
regretting it. I told you about him before. Maybe I can send him a few signals. But geez, how do I do
that? He probably thinks I’m not interested. I’m too shy to be going around wiggling anything. :-)

Welcome to TIME's Politics Bulletin Board. This is a forum for lively discussions about current events,
public policy, and all things political. All ideas are welcome, but we ask you to keep your posts
reasonable and to remember that this is a family-friendly place. Your host for the revelry is

I am sure there is another left run bb somewhere on the net. Might be hard to find one with a moderator so biased as
this one. I have been here for about four years and I have just about stopped comming to the site. It has just turned
into a left circle jerk. I have found there are lots off bbs out there that are not as biased as dave has been around here
anyway. I can name you fifteen to twenty posters here from the left that have been here long as I have. But I can
name maybe five conserv. But I am sure yall can get on Clintons site and keep the faith. They are not allowing
conserv. to say anything about Clinton there. Should be Nirvana.

I don't think you understand some of the sadness of leaving this board - leaving our memories and our history with
this community. You have to be a member of this community to understand what it means to see it shut down. Its not
just a matter of politics or a bbs. Its a matter of people that I won't see anymore and a community spirit that I found
comforting and special that will cease to exist.

[frankzzz] - 03:27am Mar 21, 2001 EST (#326 of 400)

Back in the fifties, one of the places my father would take us kids on a Sunday afternoon was the Boston Common.
Back then, a walk around The Common meant a walk between many small groups of people who were gathered around
others who were speaking their mind on just about anything.

As a kid, I rarely paid much attention to what was being said but I did enjoy the back-and-forth that went on between
speaker and audience. These "discussions" could get rather heated, and I doubt if too many minds were changed
because of them. But, in the end, people got to say what was on their mind while others joined in and somehow, that
made them seem important.

I find these message boards to be similar to those walks I took around the Boston Common over forty years ago. I don't
have to stop to listen and I don't have to say anything when I do stop. And, should I decide to add my two-cents, I
should be prepared to have someone disagree with me.

I started coming here about three years ago and I continued to do so because I found it to be everything from
entertaining to frustrating. All in all, a unique and good experience. I feel I have learned a lot and also grown a little
from this experience and like the rest of you, I will miss it when it's gone.

RMM, I liked the old format. If I recall, when you selected a particular thread, every post in that thread would be
listed. The nice part was once you identified a poster with whom you did not want to discuss an issue, you could just
ignore their posts by not opening them.

Frankzzz, the 'soap boxes' on Boston Common. That brings back some memories. Remember the old Tremont Theater?
My mother used to listen to Jerry O'Leary's quiz show on radio in the early 1940s. We were in Boston one day and she
was determined to see him in person, and we did. A major even for her.

when her teeth are firmly grasping the pant leg I shake my leg violently and she growls vicsiously
visciously?(whatever). It's kinda cool.

The Shrub, from CO2, to see you later [Ferret Mike] - 08:08am Mar 22, 2001 EST (#353 of 400)

I had goped Time was taking the long time approach with these boards. I viewed them as a valuble "loss leader" that
though they my have lost monry directly, they got it back in respect for the presyege of running a popular and
respectable forum.

A FReeper on my thread anout this closing expressed surprise I could have such regard for this place as it is a
offering of a multinational corporation.

Talk about a role reversal. He pulled me right back to the reality I should have never trusted Time was acting
altruistically by allowing this place to slowly develop when the internet is becoming a pit of marketing and deep
greed.

The big thing missing from the equation here is those in it were never given a big enough voice in it's running or
layout.

If Time would help by allowing the use of the sofeware it owns from Web Crossings and other pieces to help us make it
work, I woul imagine we could organize and figure out how to sustain this place economically.

It's a shame they never respected or regarded us highly enough to ask if we could or wanted to shoulder more of the
economic burden of this cyber community.

What if every newspaper or other news outlet had been forced to die whenever they ran in the red...

I do appreciate Time for having done this. But that doesn't mean I haven't lost most of my respect for them over the
demise of a living, breathing entity with incredible potential.

These guys would have had the police chase off Michelagelo for taking so long and wasting their money painting
pictures all over the ceiling, of their Cistine Chapel, then painted over what he had had completed.

Other than money wasted on a suck up moderator, the costs of these boards has got to be close to zero compared to
money set aside to buy staples at Time Warner.

These boards played a political purpose at Time when Clinton was the target. Now that we have an idiot republican it's
time to silence the little people.

Maybe we should all do it and hold the subscriptions hostage for the board. If they keep it up, we keep the sub. If they
drop it, we cancel after 4 issues.

If enough people did it, we'd have them in an uncomfortable position.

Even in the heyday of this board (1996-1997) this was never a "way of life". It was a distraction. A kind of "hey, I
wonder what those ‘guys’ are up to" thing. All things come to an end. I would like to thank

want you to know that I respect you for it. You have consistently told the truth while people who listen to their right
wing gurus argue with you in ridiculous ways. I would have quit long ago, but you persevere. I come here every now
and then to pop off, often in emotional ways that don’t advance my point, but you consistently and calmly say what
needs to be said. I don’t know how you do it. I would have blown my top long ago if I were you.

I'm sorry that you think I've been "suckered". I have partially emigrated there to provide some small amount of
continuity to my online experience, of which Pathfinder has been a major component. It is not the den of snakes that
you would imagine it to be, though there are a few shrill voices. There is actually a pretty good balance, and in spite
of the possibility of unmoderated conflagrations, it has been pretty calm. I respect your opinion, and I am dismayed at

- Hoeker...I doubt very much that you're easily suckered. But you’ll eventually have to ask yourself what it is you
want to accomplish by being one of the few token liberals (if I may label you for a moment) on a
‘grassrootconservative’ board.

- Things have changed after eight years of Conservative witch hunts and Inquisitions...and now they laugh in our
face because we can do nothing about their usurpation of power.

- The cabal of RWingers in question are some of the most insulting and condescending people I’ve ever met. Civility
and fair play are foreign concepts to them...and they treat the truth like an enemy.

- I’ve stayed around this board so long because of posters like you. But I’ve had quite enough of the RWing
revisionists who enable Resident Bush to establish his plutocracy.

- Thanks for your kind comments, Horseman.

Sounds wonderful Jim. I have bicycled the Oregon coast more then once and want to do so early this summer.

After the close of this place I hace six days before the start of Saturday Market and I plan on peddling for at least four
days, but I don't know the route yet.

Glad you had a good time. I know as for now, I wouldn't want to live anywhere but Oregon.

The Compassionate Liberal - Kinder & Gentler [Oregon_Jim] - 10:41am Mar 23, 2001 EST (#385 of 400)

Mike

The Portland Saturday Market (much more 'commercial' than Eugene's) started up either last Sunday or the Sunday
before.

Even though it's not as funky as Eugene's it's still a nice way to spend a Saturday or Sunday morning on the banks of
the Willamette River at Waterfront Park.

Today is another killer day - it's like July as far as the weather.

Strange year...............

McCarthyism isn't always a bad thing. [Ferret Mike] - 06:44pm Mar 27, 2001 EST (#386 of 400)

Jim - It is a strange year. I was tempted to try to work fire crews as a twenty man single resource boss, or a squad
leader, but what I could do three years ago is different, and I got the message from this to seek other areas which help
my future more then fire fighting would. The money is enticing, 12 hour days working seven days a week ain't.

Therefore, my jobs are secure for now. I love Eugene's market a great deal. I get to the office at five in the morning
and roll out the traffic control junk to close lanes and piss off motorists by coning off perfectly good parking spaces
to waste on those damn bicycles.

{Goddess help me, I love that chore so much.}

We set up the shelters, the stage and PA, line and place the trash cans and fence off the grass so the "travelers" using
those lawns can feel so much more the outlaw when they trample them.

Oh yes, we also set up the info Goddess' info palace. And we do that first thing as you whould well imagine. It is hell
working at a place the InfoGoddess' are feeling contentious and ugly.

I will miss not seeing PipeStone Jimmy Munyer there. We banned cannabis pipe sales. An rediculous consession to
the hand wringers worried that if we don't become more like Valley River Center vendors will lose sales. The sort of
people who if they had their way the Market would had died long ago.

Rainbow Warrior/Pipestone Jimmy won't be there anymore with his trademark handmade pipestone pipes and
handmade bamboo and beeswaxed hemp twined bongs.

He would be flagrantly in violation of Market policy, just out of the envalope of our influence with a huge sign:
SATURDAY MARKET UNFAIR TO PIPE CRAFTSMEN

Now he is dead. One more face from a sea of local faces I love very much. He enjoyed posting in here when he did. And
we fought each other as much as we were tight friends too. Go figure.

I lurk when Market is open more then I used too. I am too well known and too many people want a piece of my time
when I go there, so I pace myself. I get there in the evening to work and my first hour I am paid is spent patiently
nodding to the babble of someone or the other, bless them.

I'm just glad I don't have a streak of postal workers in the family when my patienc e gets thinned out down there. I
have to be patient and be stoic about it because when I work I represent the Market, and the manager would fire me
in a heartbeat if I violated the complicated ambiance of a mix of counterculture and modern American culture which
is in equal servings at the Market in Eugene.

If you are ever here, tell Danbo at the Hemp food's booth, "A Loving Spoonful" you are a friend of Ferret Mike. Him or
Daniel at "Get Fried Rice."

Wnen I am at Market I am usually there, or they have a line on me.

Ray does a food trip at the Oregon Country Faire, "Chef LeGritz" which is a fun feast to be at. Eugene is a place where
being a full time new or old style counterculture type is taken very seriously.

Enough rambling for now, so have a great week, and thanks for the mail at Lurker@surffast.com. As I said in the
reply, I am phasing that account out and going to my ferret@surffast.com address.

Today is the first day of the rest of my life. [geogent] - 11:04am Mar 30, 2001 EST (#398 of 400)

A time to say so long. I've been weaning myself away from this addictive habit of actively participating in Politics. It
has provided me over five years of great pleasure, occasional dismay and, occasionally, bouts of anger. More
importantly, it has provided me an opportunity to 'meet' some great people. With one or two exceptions, people who
have affected my position on any number of issues in various ways.

Setting aside the name calling and insults, you have all added to my insight and understanding to some degree. I
suspect a number of you have been tolerant of my shortcomings in understanding the fine points of some issues
while being patient and courteous in broadening my knowledge.

It has been my pleasure to have become a small part of this 'community'. While I will miss the company of those I've
'met' here, it is not unlike my 30 year Army career. During that time, events dictated that I periodically move on to
something new and different, but in all those moves, my path would cross the paths of those I met in another place
and at another time.

It is my hope, and even expectation, that I'll enjoy the pleasure of your company again.

Dave, you are the only one I'll address directly. I think you've done one commendable job of maintaining peace in
what can sometimes be described as an anarchical community.

For the rest, above all, I wish you peace.
