I got BabÕs bust (that always sounds vaguelyÉI dunnoÉwrong). SpagzÕs barstool is where it
belongs. StarÕs lying in front of the fire, waiting to have her ears scratched.

Everything looks about right.

I think this place could use some music though. So a quarter goes into the Cyber Jukebox and we
get F-11: Dexter Gordon and his great tune, ÒDexter Rides AgainÓ.

Jeez! And the TOL boards are shutting down for good in just 12 days! Drink up, folks.

No TIME at all. The Rumpus Room is going to have to go on the road. Gypsy Caravan type thing.

Uncle Pete sez: "Fuggedaboudit!" [streamline] - 05:43pm Mar 19, 2001 EST (#3 of 488)

It strikes me as sad that this could well be the very last Rumpus Room too. GW started it a good
while back, about five years ago as I recall. Star and I first stumbled in during late '96 and I still
can't get that half-in-the-bag beagle to come home!

[babblingbrook] - 06:15pm Mar 19, 2001 EST (#4 of 488)

Well, everybody...drink hearty! At the end of the month - I'm sending the bar tab to Steve Case!
Flug him if he can't take a joke!

Ramondo, my soon-to-be ex-collegiate friend...toss me a bottle of Glenlivet, will ya? I'll be over
there in the corner packing up my memories and battle scars....

Isn't it interesting that Dave's announced first day of a no TOL world is April Fools Day?

Isn't it interesting that Dave's announced first day of a no TOL world is April Fools Day?

It does sort of lend an air of *disbelief* to it, doesn't it? So you suppose he's just trying to get us all
to behave? Naw....Dave's not Machevelian...right?

I don't even know if it means a single solitary thing - but I'm trying to take a little heart from it.

I've been lurking on all of the "Boo-Hoo" threads. I don't feel much like posting on them just yet. I
don't want to gush and that's what seems to be going on.

I could use a beer though...

Whatever's your pleasure. Remember, it's on Case's tab. (I did this once in RL to Warner's, so I
guess I can do it in cyberspace!)

Hi folks...

Wardaddy... The pic was of the closest thing to Mulder I could find... He's (she's? How does one
tell with lovebirds??) really better looking... We just got him, so no pics yet, but I'll take some
this week.

Yes, we have a cage (uh, several in fact...) he's in a 18 x 24 x 18 *house style* one that he seems
to like. My rehabber friend is coming over to help me clip wings in a couple days and he'll be
spending most of his time in the birdie playground we got him, tho... He was hand raised but
has been mostly ignored for about 6 months, so is a little jumpy... we'll see what happens then...

The folks he came from were a 2 dog, 5 cat, 3 bird family so he hasn't been able to get out...
we're *bird proofing the apartment this week so he won't get into touble and going to let him
out a lot...

He's got good timing, we can tell. He was quiet on the way here, til I told him he'd have to learn
to sing if he lived with us... then he started sqawking..LOL and he nags if people aren't quiet by
about 11:30... He's starting now...

And so Yahoo was upon us!

And, lo, it came to pass that the trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a
young wife by the name of Dot. And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long
of leg. Indeed, she had been called Amazon Dot Com. And she said unto Abraham, her husband,
"Why doth thou travel far from town to town with thy goods, when thou can trade without ever
leaving thy tent?"

And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but
simply said, "How, dear?" And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in
between to send messages saying what you have for sale and they will reply telling you which
hath the best price. And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery by Uriah's Pony Stable
(UPS)."

Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And Dot said,
"There will be a lot of noise in the land." And Abraham replied, "It is my most fervent wish that
this be so." And the drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods
he had, at the top price, without ever moving from his tent.

But his success did arouse envy. A man named Maccabia did secret himself inside Abraham's
drum and was accused of insider trading. And the young did take to Dot Com's trading as doth
the greedy horsefly to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican
Siderites, or NERDS for short.

And, lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums,
that no one noticed that the real riches were going to thedrum maker, one Brother William of
Gates, who bought up every drum company in the land. And indeed did insist on making drums
that would only work if you bought Brother William's drumsticks.

And Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others." And as
Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or as it came to be known, 'eBay,' he said, "We need
a name of a service that reflects what we are." And Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew
Owner Operators."

"Whoopee!" said Abraham.

"No, YAHOO!" said Dot Com.

Boomer, good morning (you, too, Cooter), and glad it sounds like you might survive. My mom
has had something for over a week. She finally was somewhat better yesterday. They had given
her enuf antibiotics for 5 or 6 days---she had a sinus infection on top of whatever else she had.
I think another few days would have knocked it better. She IS going back to the Dr. today so
they can see how she is doing.

Know you are really wanting to go see that baby---hope you are able to soon! ;)

Good morning Susan, Boomer too (if you're still around).

Today's the first day of spring and it's also pianist Marian McPartland's birthday (1920). Star
the Wonder Beagle won't be in today. She's still sleeping off last night.

I T ' S S P R I N G !

and I just saw my first robin in the backyard moments ago!

Good Mornin' one and all!!! Yes I heard about the boards, but for the moment I'm going to get
my day off to a good start...that problem will still be there and I'll be better able to handle it
later.

Today is: the first day of Spring (as of 8:31 am EST)

Arrivals:
Ozzie Nelson, Michael Redgrave, Carl Reiner, "Mr." Fred Rogers, Hal Linden, Ted Bessell, Brian
Mulroney, Bobby Orr, William Hurt, Spike Lee, Theresa Russell and Holly Hunter

Departures: Isaac Newton and Chet Huntley

Notables:
1602 The Dutch East India Company was established. During its 96-year history, it became one of
the world's most powerful companies.
1964 The game show Jeopardy! debuted on NBC, with Art Fleming as the original show host.
Merv Griffin created the popular show, which ran on NBC for 11 successful years before being
cancelled in an effort to change the "look" of NBC's daytime lineup. It was later brought back
in 1978 for a year, then back again in 1984, with Alex Trebek as show host.
1995 In Tokyo, 12 people were killed, and more than 5,500 others sickened when packages
containing the poisonous gas sarin leaked on five separate subway trains.
1996 The British government said that a rare brain disease that had killed 10 people was
probably linked to so-called "mad cow disease."

Today's thought:
"Spring is God's way of saying, 'One more time!' " --- Robert Orben (US editor, writer)

ODDS & ENDS:
SPRING: when the Sun is exactly above the equator and day and night are of equal length; also,
either of the two points in the sky where the ecliptic (the Sun's annual pathway) and the
celestial equator intersect. The vernal equinox, marking the beginning of spring in the
Northern Hemisphere, occurs about March 21, when the Sun moves north across the celestial
equator. For those of you in the Southern Hemisphere...just reverse the season... Happy Autumn
to you.

You see, there's a lump in my throat and a sick feeling in my gut.

Goddammit, this sucks.

I am going to miss all of you. ALL of you.

Over the years I've come to know a good number of you guys. Even met a handful of you. And I
have got to say that the folks I've met on Pathfinder have been just about the greatest group of

Sad, A Lawyer and his Stuff

A very successful lawyer had parked his brand-new lexus in front of the office, ready to show
it off to his colleagues. As he opened the door, a truck came along, and completely tore off the
driver's door! The attorney immediately grabbed his cell phone, hit speed dial for 911, and had a
policeman there in three minutes.

Before the cop had a chance to ask any questions, the lawyer started screaming hysterically.
He had just picked up the Lexus the day before, and now it would never be the same, no matter
how good a job the body shop does.

After the lawyer finally wound down from his rant, the cop shook his head in disgust and
disbelief. "I can't believe how materialistic you lawyers are," he said. "You are so focused on
your possessions that you don't notice anything else."

"How can you say such a thing?" he responded indignantly.

The cop replied, "You didn't even notice that your left arm is missing from the elbow down! It
must have been torn off when the truck hit you."

"OH,NO!" screamed the lawyer in shock, "Where is my Rolex?!"

classes to try and make... I can do this at home... Chicklita is doing pretty well with it as well.

I think you'd like Tai Chi, Lara... you should try it... It requires the same discipline and control,
isn't as demanding as Karate... and is still a form of self defense when speeded up...

It's more about overall well being than other martial arts...

Mornin'

Tea's on, basket of croissants, assorted jams, honeys and sweet butter of course...enjoy.

[sigh] I will sooo miss this place. Just a few more of these dailies left, so here goes....

Today is: Elimination of Racial Discrimination (International)
also, Nau-Roz [or New Year's Day] (Baha'i), Persian New Year, Single Parent's Day (USA) and
Bird Day (Iowa)

Arrivals:
Johann Sebastian Bach, Benito Juarez, Florenz Ziegfeld, Timothy Dalton, Gary Oldman, Matthew
Broderick and Rosie O'Donnell

Departures:
Pocahontas (burial date), Robert Preston, Dean Martin jr.

Notables:
1617 Celebrated Indian princess Pocahontas was buried on this date in London. She died from
small pox, as did several of her Indian companions. Major figures from the worlds of art and
commerce had sought her out upon her arrival in England, including the King and Queen, who
had her sit with them during a presentation of Twelfth Night. Pocahontas was in her early
twenties at the time of her death, and had assumed the Christian name of Rebecca.
1788 Fire destroyed 856 buildings in New Orleans Louisiana
1857 Earthquake hits Tokyo; about 107,000 die
1917 Czar Nicholas II and his family were arrested by revolutionary forces in Russia.
1960 Almost 70 people were killed and more than 180 wounded when South African police fired
on a peaceful black demonstration in Sharpeville in the Transvaal.
1961 The Beatles made their debut in an appearance at Liverpool’s Cavern Club, where they
became regulars in a matter of months.
1963 Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco Bay, a harsh maximum security jail which once housed
gangster Al Capone, closed.
1965 Martin Luther King led the start of a 4,000-strong civil rights march from Selma to
Montgomery, Alabama

Today's thought:
You cannot prevent the birds of sorrow from flying over your head, but you can prevent them
from building nests in your hair. --- Chinese Proverb

ODDS & ENDS:
In 1868 Alcatraz island was designated as a residence for military offenders. Later prisoners
included rebellious Indian scouts from the Arizona territory, American soldiers fighting in the
Philippines who had deserted and joined the Filipino cause in 1900, and civilians who had
resisted the U.S. army in China. The first federal prisoners arrived at Alcatraz on August 11,
1934. One of its most famous inhabitants, Robert Stroud (Birdman of Alcatraz) only spent 17 of
his 54 years in jail at Alcatraz. He really should have been dubbed the Birdman of
Leavenworth. BTW, Alcatraz is Spanish for pelican.

lara and surferchick: The chick from Surferland is on the money.

Tai Chi is slow motion and meditative, and concentrates on generating chi, or vital energy,
within your body. But Tai Chi is also a martial art and does involve kicks and various strikes.

I find that Tai Chi works well in tandem with kung fu. They have the same origin in China, and
many of the moves are similar.

And you're right, lara, kick-ass karate is for young people. Us old folks don't need to kick ass
any more; we should be accumulating wisdom.

[lara croft] - 10:24am Mar 21, 2001 EST (#69 of 488)

Yeah, that's it, wisdom. Wisdom over bruising and spraining important body parts. Wisdom over
bending joints in directions they were never meant to go.

I can look you in the eye at the exact moment I'm kicking you in the back of the head.

Somehow that's not as important as it used to be.

Probably because increasingly it hurts me as much as it hurts you.

It never used to be that way.

Gawd, I must be getting old.

Wisdom, I think I'm getting the hang of it.

BTW Pocahontas is not buried in London. She rests in the St. Georges Parish Churchyard in
Gravesend, near Dartford, Kent. The Parish paid for her casket and still have the records of the
`made-to-measure' casket. She was a short, stout lady.

I got back from the interview about a half hour ago. This is a very big money position with lots
of risk and tons of potential reward. I'm fascinated with the position, but not too sure about the
guy I'd report to.

I interviewed with the president of the company for close to two hours. It reminded me of those
nature films that show a hornet and a spider squaring off. We bobbed and weaved, traded barbs
and came to a tense level of mutual respect. He's interested, but am I?

Too soon to tell. But then there's all that money...

Peter Cammann [streamline] - 07:49pm Mar 21, 2001 EST (#111 of 488)

I agree with you, GW. I have a lot of nagging doubts about this particular company and I know
that I would far prefer to work for the firm where I went for a meeting yesterday instead. The
money wouldn't be as good, but I feel a lot more comfortable with the owner, the market, and
the culture there.

I have to keep my hand in with the place I interviewed at today though. I feel it's important
now to make a move to a new job situation during the coming months as I have a growing
uneasiness about the direction of the company where I now work. There's no real marketing
plan and the owner is now going after a new market with his personal resources (cash)and he
has shown no interest in cutting in the rest of the company on the deal. I think he's casting
the rest of the staff to drift wherever the currents take us.

I am confident though that the company I want to work with will make an offer in the next two
to three weeks. We've put together a good deal for both sides and all that's needed is for the
owner to pull the trigger. He's told me he wants it to happen and I've known him for quite a
number of years. He actually offered me this same job two years ago, but I turned him down
then.

I'm sure glad I went on vacation a month ago. If I hadn't gotten all relaxed and sunbaked first,
I'd be an emotional wreck by now. See? Fishing, rum, and good times with your ladies are very
effective therapy!;^)

of several trees being felled because of 1) winds and 2) supersaturated ground.
It's still windy here today, but the sun is peeking out from behind some clouds.

Cool deal. They're predicting that it's going to turn to snow, but I don't believe them...

There's no reward for finding fault. [muse] - 12:29pm Mar 22, 2001 EST (#133 of 488)

Whew, finally made it here! Missed breakfast, but in time for lunch...and tea...thanks Barry for
putting the kettle on *w* and let me just add this...[sets down big pitcher of water at the bar].
That'll make sense later.

Today is: World Day for Water (International)

Arrivals:
Chico [Leonard] Marx, Louis L'Amour, Karl Malden, Ross Martin, Werner Klemperer, Marcel
Marceau, Stephen Sondheim, William Shatner, Emmett Walsh, Glen Campbell, Andrew Lloyd
Weber, Bob Costas, Lena Olin, Elvis Stojko and Reese Witherspoon [exhaling...]

Departures:
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Michael Todd, Karl Wallenda and Walter Lantz

Notables:
1765 Britain enacted the Stamp Act to raise money from the American colonies and repealed it
the following year. (It flourishes today under the USPS...hehe)
1841 Englishman Orlando Jones patented that fabulous miracle food known as corn starch.
1882 Congress outlawed polygamy...after all, having more than one mother-in-law is cruel and
unusual punishment.
1895 Auguste and Louis Lumiere gave the first demonstration of motion pictures using celluloid
film in Paris.
1978 Karl Wallenda, the 73-year-old patriarch of the famous "Flying Wallendas" high-wire act,
fell to his death while attempting to walk a cable in Puerto Rico.
1995 The convicted murderer, known as the Long Island Railroad gunman, was sentenced to
life in prison for killing six people and injuring twenty others. Dennis McCarthy, James
Gorycki and Amy LoCicero Federici were three of the murdered victims. I spent the whole
morning searching and could not find the other three names. My heartfelt apologies to those
victims. It's so sad that the criminal's name is prominent and the innocents are forgotten.
2233 According to the official "Star Trek" biography, James T. Kirk will be born in Riverside,
Iowa.

Today's thought:
With true friends . . . even water drunk together is sweet enough. --- Chinese Proverb

ODDS & ENDS:
The four Great Lakes???
What should have been considered one body of water, Lake Michigan-Huron with an area of
45,410 square miles, was mistakenly given two names, one for each lobe. The explorers in
colonial times incorrectly believed each lobe to be a separate lake because of their great size.
The Huron Lobe and the Michigan Lobe are at the same elevation and are connected by the
120-foot deep Mackinac Strait, which is just a narrowing and not a river. The flow between the
two lakes can reverse, they have identical water level regimes and mean longterm behavior;
that is, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are hydrologically considered one lake.

We've got a jazz birthday doubleheader today: guitarist Gerige Benson (1943) and saxophonist
Bob Mover (1953).

I've been out driving since 8 this AM in the snow storm. Lotsa fun, lemme tell you. I had three
very quick meetings that all related to one deal and had to put a lotta rubber on the road to
accomplish it all. Too bad the roads were all covered with snow. Another foot expected before
tomorrow. Then, you guessed it, I'm back on the road again - this time to Montreal.

Snowing again, oh well, it is winter here.

Own up time. Gubment of Manitoba and US have, according to CBC TV news, admitted that sheep

have no modern equip. to test for it, so it is not a problem.

City of Calgary plans to license beggers soon. They plan to make homeless beggers in Canada's
richest City have to apply for a license and wear a label, before they can beg. No statement on
what the begger fee will be. If that dosn't work tattooing their begger number on their
forehead could be tried. A alderman said yesterday "Everything we've have tried to this point
han't eliminated it, so maybe we need to try a different approach." (Ald. Hawksworth)

and tonight he's committed to help a friend with some seriously heavy lifting???

Well, above and beyond all I've just posted,

Hi, Jay.

I just posted my goodby to this boad.

< streamline "Parting thoughts, from fellow posters to each other" 3/23/01 8:32am >

I'll be lurking a good bit, but outside of the Rumpus Room, I doubt I'll be posting all that much
during the coming week.

I'm heading to Montreal later this morning. Well, that is if the snow lets up some. We got
completely covered last night and I have to figure we got another foot and a half on top of all
the other white crap that was already on the ground. The roads are very sloppy right now, but
with luck I'll be able to navigate my way north in a few hours.

Good morning to Boomer and Barry too!

ON TO THE DAILIES.....

Today is: World Meteorological Day (I think we should call it Henny Penny Day)
also: Liberty Day (USA), Memorial Day (Bolivia) and Pakistan Day

Arrivals:
Fanny Farmer, Joan Crawford, Werner von Braun, Marty Allen, Rick Ocasek, Louie Anderson,
Richard Greico and Keri Russell

Departures: Peter Lorre

Notables:
1775 Patrick Henry told the Virginia Convention "Give me liberty, or give me death!"
1919 Benito Mussolini founded his own party in Italy, the Fasci di Combattimento.
1933 The German parliament passed the Enabling Bill, giving Adolf Hitler and the Nazis the
dictatorial powers they had been seeking.
1940 "Truth or Consequences" was first heard on radio. The Ralph Edwards produced program
was hosted by Mr. Edwards before he discovered a young announcer named Bob Barker.
1956 Under its new constitution Pakistan became an Islamic republic.
1989 An asteroid came within 500,000 miles of hitting Earth.
1997 Heaven's gate suicides leave 39 dead in California.
1997 Five dead bodies are found arranged in a cross formation at the burned Quebec home of
Didier Queze. They were members of the Solar Temple cult who in 1994 to 1996 had totalled 69
suicides in Europe and North America.
2001 The space station Mir plunged through the atmosphere erupting into a fireball before
landing in the South Pacific. It now holds the dubious distinction of being the largest piece of
junk ever to fall to Earth.

ODDS & ENDS:
The bubbles in coffee can tell you what the day’s weather will be. Stare at your coffee before
adding milk. If the bubbles float toward the rim of the cup, the pressure is low and clouds and
stormy weather can be expected. If the bubbles float to the center, the pressure is high and
fair weather can be expected. I don't think this works with Guy's coffee!?!?!

sorry for the water works Guy....Next time build on stilts. You can park under the

Actually, the flooding, while a pain in the ass, caused extremely little damage. We had a much
worse flood last April -- we were NOT expecting to have 6" of water in our basement then...

This time, we were prepared -- everything in the basement was either 12" up on plastic
shelving or stored in large plastic totes...

Barry

Where's that water coming from Guy?

Basement stairs. Last April we had a massive flood that resulted from an infestation of
groundhogs. Our house has a cast concrete stairway leading out of the basement. When the
foundation for the house is poured, there's a hole there for the stairs. This concrete stair unit is
lowered into place, sealed with a rubber gasket, then bolted onto the foundation.

Well, the groundhogs decided that the concrete stair unit was the perfect roof for their
burrow... They dug a large hole directly under the basement stairs. When we got heavy spring
rains, the water just poured in up against the foundation and stayed there. Eventually, a hole
was worn through the rubber gasket sealing the concrete stairs to the foundation of the house.
And viola! We have water in our basement.

I filled in the hole last year, but the goddamn rodents came back. The worst part is, Mrs. Guy
thinks the little fekkers are "cute" and won't let me shoot them... :(

Needless to say, we've got more water in our basement...

Guy's solution? Shoot the mo-fo groundhogs.

Anyone got a good recipe for woodchuck? >:)

Coffee a bit crunchy this morning!

Yeah, I mix crushed-up Vivarin in with the coffee grounds...

Mornin' Muse!

Sorry to hear about the flooding Guy...hope it doesn't do too much damage. You
should change your nic to Noah. hehe

Thanks... As I posted above, the damage was in fact minimal.

I'm going to change my nick to "Groundhog Slayer", tho'...

You all have a great weekend. I'll likely check back in here on Sunday. I've got one last batch
of homebrew to bottle and then I'm shutting down the brewroom in my home until August
(except for storage, of course). As I recall, the Red Sox and the Reds are playing an exhibition
game at one in the afternoon and I should be finished shlepping bottles by then.

To mem'ry now I can't recall.

So,fill to me the parting glass.
Good night and joy be with you all.

If I had money enough to spend
And leisure time to sit awhile,
There is a fair maid in this town
That sorely has my heart beguiled.
Oh, rosy cheeks and ruby lips,
I own she has my heart in thrall.

Oh, fill to me the parting glass.
Good night and joy be with you all.

Oh, all the comrades that e'er I had,
They're sorry for my going away.
And all the sweethearts e'er I had,
They'd wish me one more day to stay.
But since it falls unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not,
I'll gently rise and softly call,
Goodnight and joy be with you all.

Hmmmmm, think I'll take this ashtray as a momento...and this half empty bottle of LaPhroaig.

Raymondo I'll have the usual double--no make that a triple Stoli. Yes, I realize it's 7:30 in the
morning here on the West Coast, Raymundo! I saw Dave's notice about the boards shutting down
a few days ago and have been wracking my brain to come up with something profound to post,
and a triple Stoli should help.

I thought about making some meaningful thread to say goodbye to this board and all the
amazing, wonderful, brilliant and hilarious nuts I've met here, but in the end I opted to return
to the Politics boozer where I first begin my foray into TOL 'Politics' board.

I guess I shouldn't have much trouble transitioning to Davka's Refugee Board--I came here as a
refugee of TOL's 100 board. I first tested the waters flaming babbette and joining the Irish in
some absurd flame topics with NO intention of ever really getting involved with this board.

But one evening early on I dropped in here at the RR and ran into Sherrie and Lara and I
think maybe Robbie was there that night too, if not that night she was here shortly thereafter.
I was hooked! BTW: where the hell is Robbie????

After that I found myself whiling away hours on end here and eventually venturing out into
the polical wars too. What I found was the most astute, witty, intelligent and completely crazed
collection of miscreats anywhere on the WWW (of course with one or 2 notable exceptions).

I'm surprised I still have my original monitor from all the coffee, water, chardonnay etc, I
sprayed it with while reading the treads on this board. I've almost choked to death a thousand
times laughing at the brilliantly hilarious posts or from frothing at the mouth when delving
into a particularily heated flamewar.

And I have to say that even with the posters I most violently disagreed with (again with 1 or 2
notable exceptions), they were still highly intelligent, articulate and most importantly
entertaining!

And what can I say about our host here, Guy, you kept me in good chardonnay, double Stoli's,
great conversation and you offered a shelter from the polical and the BillR storms. We LOVE
you man! I understand you intend to setup shop in the new hood.... DON'T count on me to help
with the move--I got stuck with that chore one too many times before. And if Lara and Rico are
gonna help, make sure you hide painless first. I remember the time we almost lost the bust of
Babs!

I've got to work today, Raymondo, but please have another double-er-triple waiting for me
when I get back--these are maudlin times.

Corey's Comin'
Harry chapin

Old John Joseph was a man with two first names
They left him in the railroad yard when they took away the trains
And only one run a week comes on roarin' down that line
So all he"s got to worry 'bout is time
He sits in the brake house, his hands out to the fire
Movin' through his memories of love and desire
Telling me the stories of the glories of his past
But he always saves the story of his Corey for the last

CHORUS:
And he says: "My Corey's coming. No more sad stories coming. My midnight,
moonlight, morning glory's coming
Aren't you, girl?
And like I told you,
When she holds you,
She enfolds you in her world.

I'd come by in the evening to find out where he'd been
And he'd say, "Come on, sit down kid, where shall I begin?
And I'd say, "You know my favorite, though you know I like the rest
But I love the way you tell me of your Corey the best
And I'd hear his life long love recreated by his tongue
He'd turn back the years, she'd be forever young.
Though the other stories changed as they rolled through his head
He'd say the same words 'bout Corey just before he went to bed
And then he'd send me away but he'd be smiling as he said--CHORUS

I was quite surprised to find out all the places that he knew
So I asked the townsfolk if his stories were true
Well they said "Old John was born here, he's lived here all his life
Never had a woman, let alone a wife.
And very soon you'll find (out) as you check around,
That no one named Corey's ever lived in this town."
So I chided the old man about the truth that I had heard.
"Well," he smiled and said, "Reality is only just a word."--CHORUS

I came by one evening but he did not hear my shout.
I looked in the window and I saw the fire was out.
When he did not wake up, I forced in the door.
And I found that old John Joseph would tell stories no more.

BRIDGE: (Slow dirge, minor chord progression) There was the scene at the
graveyard, just three of us were there
It was me and the grave digger and we heard the parson's prayer.
He said, "We need not grieve for this man for we know that God cares

Well, they threw the cold dirt over him, and left me on my own.
When at last I looked up, I saw I was not alone.
Standing there in silence with a shawl around her head
Was a beautiful young woman, I remember what she said:
"Is that John Joseph there?" I nodded my head yes.
That brought a soft smile from her, she said, "It's time he got some rest."
So I said, "If you're a relative, he had a peaceful end."
She said, "My name is Corey, you can say I'm just a friend."--CHORUS

So that's the old man's story, I'm glad you came tonight
You see, a broken down old railroad yard sure makes a lonely sight
You may wonder why a young man would work out here alone.
Well, the job pays enough to keep some flesh on my bones
And I confess that I get to missing the old man a bit
Yes, there's one other reason I guess I could admit.--CHORUS

Good morning, Jay. Hi, Natrona.

Things are always a little slow on Sunday AM and what with the gradual migration of posters to
new sites - even more so on this, the last full weekend of TOL.

I've got a batch of ale to bottle this morning. Then I'm shutting down production ntil late
August. I'll have put up somewhere around 17-18 cases for the spring/summer!

Anyway, it's a cool but gorgeous day here in the mountains. I was in Montreal the past couple
days, visiting friends and enjoying myself with my ladies. We had a fabulous dim sum brunch
yesterday in Chinatown and did some shopping in Little Italy before heading back.

Coffee's brewing and I've got projects to do. I'll check back later today.

Not particularly. I know that my name is on the list to attend the SETAC conference. The

TO ALL MY FRIENDS IN THE RUMPUS ROOM:

Well, this is one heck of a note! I take a 9-month sabbatical from the Board (to help write a
huge report no one will ever read) and Bam! – learn just a couple of days ago that the TL Board
will probably be history as of next Saturday! I can't believe it – and am SO sorry, because I have
looked forward to rejoining you as soon as possible. To paraphrase WR, "I never met a man (or
lady) in the Rumpus Room that I didn't like." So, I am going to miss you all, and if you should
light in some other place, will you please e-mail me – HnbLecterMD@aol.com – and let me know
so I can re-join you later. In the meantime, here's a little W.C. Fields quote I saw in the bar at
Mary Mahoney's in Biloxi (Cooter & War Daddy have probably been there many times – the
eatery is famous down in those parts)!

"Nobody minds a man having a morning eye-opener, and it's OK to have a bracer around 10 AM
and also a couple of drinks before lunch, and any man needs a few beers on a hot afternoon to
keep himself healthy (or at least happy) – and, of course, almost everyone drinks during the
cocktail hour. And a man can't really be criticized for having wine with his dinner, a liqueur
afterwards and a highball or two in the evening. BUT THIS DAMNED BUSINESS OF SIP, SIP, SIP
ALL DAY LONG HAS GOT TO STOP!!"

So long, my friends, and may we all meet again. PS – And will the last person out of the Rumpus
Room please turn out the lights?

I'm always looking for new recipes.

I bottled a couple cases of "Apple Pie Ale" today. It's a Bavarian Wheat Ale, flavored with apples

I tried an Espresso Stout I bottled in early February and a Scotch Ale I put up in late January
tonight. The stout is tremendous, but the Scotch Ale could sit another couple weeks.

I also wonder why kids wake up so damned early.

whether it'll stay up but be inert.

Most likely it'll just give that "Post with no data" page for anything you try to access. Either
that or "File Not Found" (Say it like the old guy in that commercial...)

I also wonder why kids wake up so damned early.

If you ever figure this out, let me know. I'll be your agent...

We brought our own grill, along with some cold barley sodas and Bloody Marys. The Rebs beat

ODDS & ENDS:
Some snipits on sleep
Doctors have identified more than 100 sleep disorders, but the one most people suffer from is
simply not taking the time to get enough sleep.
According to a 1999 survey conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, of those people who
snore, 19 percent snore so loudly that they can be heard through a closed door.
The average person who stops smoking requires one hour less sleep a night.
Early mattresses were filled with straw and held up with a rope stretched across the bed
frame. If the rope was tight, sleep was comfortable. Hence the phrase, "sleep tight."
The act or habit of talking while asleep is called "somniloquy."
Your brain is more active sleeping than it is watching TV

The "sleep debt"...

That's an interesting thingy, Jay. I found that before Grace was born that I couldn't get by on
less than seven hours of sleep a night. Now six is closer to average and I seem to function
perfectly well. I still crave more sleep, I just find that I don't need it though.

Trying to keep a stiff upper lip around here is tough! [pouring tea] I don't like breaking the

Today is: Happy Birthday Day (sort of)

Arrivals: Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, Henry Royce, Patty Smith Hill, Gloria Swanson, Sarah
Vaughan, David Janssen, Judy Carne, Cale Yarborough, Michael York, Tom Sullivan and Mariah
Carey

Departures: Yuri Gagarin (in a plane crash of all things!)

Notables:
1964 One of the largest quakes in North America strikes 80 miles east of Anchorage, Alaska. The
seismic wave that followed was 50 feet high and traveled 8,445 miles at 450 miles per hour. More
than100 people died and damage was estimated at $500 million.
1977 582 people were killed when two Boeing 747 planes collide on a runway in the Canary
Island of Tenerife, making this the worst aviation disaster in history.
1980 Mount St. Helens in Washington state becomes active after 123 years.
1980 147 people died when the Alexander Kielland, a floating platform for off-duty oil workers,
capsized in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea.
1996 The European Commission banned the sale of British beef and cattle to the rest of the
world because of "mad cow" disease

Today's thought:
The smart husband says, "How do you expect me to remember your birthday when you never
look any older?"

ODDS & ENDS:
Two sisters, Mildred Hill, a teacher at the Louisville, Kentucky Experimental Kindergarten, and
Dr. Patty Hill, the principal of the same school, together wrote a song for the children, entitled
"Good Morning to All." The sisters published the song in a collection entitled "Song Stories of
the Kindergarten" in 1893. Thirty-one years later, after Dr. Patty Hill became the head of the
Department of Kindergarten Education at Columbia University's Teacher College, a gentleman
by the name of Robert H. Coleman published the song, without the sisters' permission and he
took the liberty of adding a second verse, the familiar "Happy Birthday to You." Mr. Coleman's
addition of the second verse popularized the song and, eventually, the sisters' original first
verse disappeared.

After Mildred died in 1916, Patty, together with a third sister named Jessica, sprang into action
and took Mr. Coleman to court. In court, they proved that they, indeed, owned the melody.
Because the family legally owns the song, it is entitled to royalties from it, whenever it is sung
for commercial purposes. Warner Communications paid $28 million for the copyright to the
song "Happy Birthday".

That's not the first time I've heard that, Peter -- that one adjusts to the lesser amount of sleep
one gets when there's a child involved. For instance, my wife has been able to get by on only
10 hours of sleep a day instead of her usual 12... (kidding... thank God she doesn't visit these

convinced this community cannot be created elsewhere, that I'm not going to
put a whole lot of energy into getting somewhere else. Either I get there or I
don't, but either result will be a loss.

AAAAAUUUUUGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

MsRobbie, "this community" exists SOLELY because of the people. The messaging system is
secondary fluff; it's the variety of people posting that makes this place so great.

The real loss would be if we were deprived of our resident grammatical wizard wherever we
end up.

If you don't show up I'm going to intentionally make mistakes. Ha! I don't know how you'd be
able to live with you'reself...

Afternoon, Jay

Fauforde

Saw you over on the new refugee board, but you weren't online at the time.

Well, the Vancouver Grizzlies of the NBA have announced that they are coming to Memphis
next year. A caller to the local afternoon talk show on WREC-AM observed that she wished they
would stay away since crime is already so high in Memphis.

Another NBA team is talking about coming to Memphis, too.

The problem is, only Fred Smith, the FedEx owner, and some other local businesses want them to
come so that Smith can pay to name the new arena that the taxpayers will have to build. Smith's
payment goes to the team owner not to the county/city to pay for the damned thing. When
Autozone named the stadium for the Memphis Redbirds, they built it, too. The city donated the
land rent-free.

I'd love to stay but I have to annoy someone else. [MsRobbie] - 04:40pm Mar 27, 2001
EST (#248 of 488)

Wardaddy, you ought to read the FedEx pilots' board, in which they're yipping about their
salaries versus what Fred is paying to bring in the Grizzlies.

They're not happy.

When a man's down, kick him! [wardaddy] - 04:50pm Mar 27, 2001 EST (#249 of 488)

Robbie

Smith has promised the Grizzlies' owner $100,000,000.00 over twenty years. He's paid about
twice that to have one of the bowl games named after FedEx.

They should be p**sed off.

To top it all off, the Charlotte, NC, NBA team may come to Memphis, too. They'll be playing in the
Pyramid where the University of Memphis basketball team plays its games. There'll be
wall-to-wall backetball until the new arena is finished.

Memphis property taxes are already so high that people are moving to Mississippi in droves.

soft and creamy. Cheap, too. Nine-fifty a bottle here, and Mississippi's high for alcohol. You'll
love it. very, very tasty.

Here'tis. Look for Melinda's XXXXXTra Hot Habanero sauce. It's made with Rde Savina habaneros.
They measure 400,000SCUs on the heat scale while ordinary habs only get to 3000,000SCUs.

Today's Jazz Birthday Boy is cornet player Thad Jones. Thad was one of the three famous Jones
brothers (the other two being Hank and Elvin). He is best known for his classic recordings
with saxophonist Sonny Rollins in the 1960s and drummer Mel Lewis during the 1970s - but
Jones was also an excellent composer and bandleader in his own right. A listen of his music

TASTE SHOW #TS4623

MAMA TUCKER'S CRAB CAKES

1 pound fresh lump crabmeat, picked over for shells and cartilage
1 egg
2 tablespoons Duke's mayonnaise
3 slices white bread (such as Wonder), crusts removed and cut in 1-inch chunks
1 1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce, plus extra for serving
1 heaping teaspoon honey mustard, plus extra for serving
1/2 teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning
Peanut oil and lard, for deep-frying

Place crabmeat in a large bowl. In a small bowl whisk together egg, mayonnaise, bread,
Worcestershire sauce, mustard and seasoning; pour over crabmeat and mix well. Pat one
handful of crabmeat mixture into a cake; this amount should make 5 cakes.
In a large cast-iron skillet, heat about 1-inch oil and lard over medium-high heat. Add crab
cakes and fry 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until well-browned. Remove crab cakes and drain on
paper towels. Serve with Worcestershire sauce and honey mustard, if desired.
Yield: 5 Crab Cakes

Ixnay on the honey mustard, though. I'm subbing Creole mustard for it.

Wardaddy - Thanks for the crabcake recipe.

I have two or three recipes, none of them spicy. My husband likes the "plainest" version; I like
the one that has some sweet pepper in it.

One of the recipes I got out of the now defunct Eating Well magazine. It involves pan frying
one side, then finishing up the cooking in the oven -- to reduce the amount of fat. I like that
just fine because my middle-aged GI tract no longer takes kindly to deep fried stuff.

Just about figured my CD burner for my stereo out. If any of you get one of them thangs, be
sure to buy at least one CD RW to practice with. Make sure that the jewel case is marked as an
audio CDR, too. They are different than the ones for your PC. You can ruin an audio only CDR on
a PC, but you can't write to it on your PC.

I'm lucky that I got some CD RWs. Finally found out - with no help from Sony (Surprise!) - that I
can't hook the thing up to the tape tape out jacks and record cassettes. This preamp doesn't
have tape dubbing available. Fortunately, I can hook up to the MD/SAT recording jacks.

Well, I am a little worst for wear, but nothing a little blood, sweat and tears will not handle.

Susan my old friend... I heard you were looking for me ... how nice. And of course it is always
good to see the rest of the old timers still hanging about and breathing sweet air.

I am not sure what is on the plate for the next few months... no real plans except I will
probably drift on to the Keys for a rest.

Guy --

This won't be the last time we talk, but I want to say some things in public to you, right here.

I don't wake up easily or happily. While I'm a night owl, once I go to sleep I want to stay in the
nice, warm bed. Regardless, there comes the part of the day that I eventually wake up,
sometimes even in the morning. *G*

I have a routine. I make a triple-shot (espresso) latte, then come in here to the den and sign on.
I read my e-mail, then I read two boards on AOL, then I come in here. I head directly for the
Rumpus Room, because I know you and Muse will have started my day gently.

You will have posted something about the coffee of the day that causes me to laugh. Muse will
have given us the dailies, which I always enjoy. It's a lovely way to start my day.

Jay, your sense of humor is, at once, both gentle and thigh-slapping. You have a wonderful
sense of the absurd, which you couple with a genuine caring about the people here. Your
standards are unyielding, yet you seem to make room for the truly odd among us. It's truly a
gift.

I keep thinking what a lucky little boy Joey is to have you as his father. And how lucky I've
been to know you and to drink in your pub. I'll miss you, but assume I'll see you in whatever
new Rumpus Room(s) you franchise.

Thanks for a whole lot of very good times, Jay. I'll miss the ones we've had here, and pray they
continue elsewhere.

I still resent your difficulty in telling the difference in understanding the difference in the
difference in a 200 year-old-defintion and the modern definition - ex.., the change from "nice"
from promicuous to chastity - in the old definitions. I particularly disliked your "dumbing
down" comment. You really should try to study some philology if you want to joust with me.

I'm sorry that I brought it to Guy's thread. You took a post about a sarcastic post and tried to
make it into something that it wasn't. Sarcastic remark -or post - doesn't mean that the person
is dishonest, just that the post is rude. Your refusal to accept that you're wrong is dishonest,
however.

When the argument is between whether a post is "snide" and a person is "snide," then it
becomes important. Babbling has accused me of calling her "dishonest" whan all that I did is
call her post "snide" is dishonest. She also said that she refused to "dumb down" her posts to post
to me.

She's full of crap. I never called her "dishonest" as she claimed - an Oxford- English definition
a century old and out of date - and completely incorrect. She incorrectly cites "snide
comment/post" vs "snide person" from a one hundred year old and achaic Oxford_English
Dicitionary defeinition tha tis a century out of date.

Doesn't take a philologist to confuse BB, does it?

I don't have a goodbye for anyone because I know I'll see most of you at other sites, and I've got
a vast collection of e-mail addresses.

I will say that I'll miss this venue for more reasons than I can count, but here's a few...

In 5 years, I've learned to be passionate on issues about which I'd either been lukewarm or
indifferent when I arrived.

I've learned that if you think a comment is snide, it probably was. :)

I've learned that we'll have to pry AOL out of Robbie's cold, dead fingers.

I've learned that most of the people I call friends here are people with whom I'd have become
friends if I'd met them in "real" life.

I've learned that my online persona is very different from my real life persona...in many
ways.

I've learned that if you think a comment is snide, it may not have been. *g* (The medium has
its limitations)

I've learned not to put an automatic apostrophe in "its" every time I type it.

I've learned that sliced coffee is the only way to wake up.

There's about 16 hours left in the old place...and I'm going to sleep through about 7 of those,
then work through 8 more...that leaves me an hour tomorrow afternoon to come in and say last
goodbyes...but that sounds like a bad idea...

I really don't want to be in the middle of composing some brilliant or not-so-brilliant post and
click "Post A Message" only to have run out of time. That would be too depressing...so I likely
will stop by tomorrow to read the goodbyes, but tonight is my swan song at TOL.

It's been inredibly fun, unbelievably infuriating, astonishingly enlightening, and, even as an
Atheist, I consider myself blessed to have discovered this little corner of the Internet world,
and to have had the good sense to stick around for 5 years (off and on, LOL!).

A small token of my affection:

when in those darkest moods i find my musing
arrested by most bleak and waning hope,
addled further yet by thoughts confusing
the audacity required beyond my scope;
my mettle leaves me low, my courage craven
and waives my ardor more, my fervor less
until i cede my last remaining haven
and think of you all and how i have been blest
for in the least of such deliberations,
as when sweet heralds praise the day begun
my thoughts acquit all sign of consternation
and light my soul as day is lit by sun.
in this you are the wardens of my smile
entrancing all your precious hearts beguile.

IT’S NOT MY TIME TO GO - BY DAN HICKS

The morning comes with such pain,

But it’s nothing like the dose I get when it’s night

And I can’t help but wondering just what it is.

Ain’t I living my life right

The cigarettes I’m smoking don’t realize,

Nor does the glass from which I drink

For how are they to know just

Just what it is to be a man about to sink

Ooooh no - it’s not my time to go

Ooooh no - before I go, I’ve got to show…something

The light keeps gettin dimmer,

Hey, but what’s that to me?

The morning comes with each night

A voice keeps callin’ my name so loud and so clear

I’ll pretend I’m not here

Ooooh no - it’s not my time to go

Ooooh no - before I go I’ve got to show..

No I can’t go yet, no, I’ve something to do

And it might take a bit more time

The time it takes to get up and walk out the door

And see the world as before

Ooooh no - it’s not my time to go

Ooooh no - before I go I’ve got to show…something

Peter - If you have a copy of Traver's "Trout Madness" close at hand, how about paraphrasing
his "Last Day" essay - seems sort of appropriate here - "pallbearers who must macabrely attend
their own funerals...". I would, but my copy is about 90 miles away.

Tight lines and rising trout.

Peter Cammann [streamline] - 08:42am Mar 30, 2001 EST (#395 of 488)

My copy's only about two miles away, but that's going to be far enough for this morning.

I dunno about rising trout here anytime soon, Salmosaur. It's snowing like hell and they're
calling for 6-12 inches of fresh stuff to cover the however-the-fuck-many feet of snow already
on the ground.

Hey folks - Just heard about the impending shut down and thought I'd pop over to say see ya. I
really haven't come over here for ages anyway but hope that every takes care of themselves.

A final lunch:

Today we are having a braised beef loin slow cook in veal stock and cabernet sauvignon. The
liquid is then reduced to make a gravy with onions, garlic, and lobster ear mushrooms.

On the side we have double baked sour cream potatoes and broccolli rabe.

Beverages are your responsibility.

Hey Cooter - what's new?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! [guy montag] - 09:36am Mar 30,
2001 EST (#405 of 488)

Mornin' folks...

I know it's Friday, but I don't feel like shouting.

Today is the day that the boards die.

I feel more like crying than anything else.

Yes, people have been kind enough to point us to other boards. Some people have even gone
the extra measure to start other boards. I'm sure that, over time, the closing of Pathfinder will
rightfully be seen as nothing more than a change of venues. Most of the people I've enjoyed
debating/arguing with/yelling at/kibbitzing with will continue to enrich my life on different
boards.

But right now, the bulletin board that I've posted on for almost three years is closing. This is
the only board I have posted on (well, until very recently). The people I've come to know here
are some of the best people I've ever had the priviledge of meeting. I hope with all my heart
that we will, in fact, keep jousting with each other for years to come.

Part of me wants fervently to believe that this will continue. That it's the people that make the
Pathfinder community so special and not the miscellaneous web coding. That wherever the
people go, the community will follow, and flourish.

And part of me is scared that it won't. Part of me hears the same words I spoke to my friends
from high school upon graduation: "Stay in touch". I can count on one hand the number of
friends from high school I stay in touch with on anything resembling a regular basis, and
have fingers left over.

I don't want it to end.

And there's not a damn thing I can do about it. The powers-that-be have decided, in their
infinite wisdom </sarcasm>, that a few extra dollars of corporate profit are more important than
the sense of community, cameraderie, and friendship that exists here. With one corporate
memo, the life has been sucked out of what I feel to be a living, breathing entity.

And we are all a little poorer for it.

BUT as has been pointed out before on this thread, this is not the time to be morose. Let us
celebrate the friends we've made, the jousts we've had, and the importance of continuing our
community.

Santé!

And, one last time...

Today's Coffee is the last of Guy's Truckstop Coffee. This day, more than any before it,
requires a heavy-duty coffee, a coffee that can get the job done, a coffee for the ages, a coffee
from the ages... This is extra-thick, extra-black coffee, most likely oozing out of the pot. Be
sure to scrape out an extra cup, because today, it's all gratis.

Enjoy!

Peter Cammann [streamline] - 09:38am Mar 30, 2001 EST (#406 of 488)

Cooter, you think YOUR weather is a little screwy? We're in the midst of yet another blizzard.
The Weather Channel says we've got another huge snow storm headed our way for next
Wednesday too.

I figure that I'll be able to hit the water sometime in early July...

Don't get up, gentlemen, I'm only passing through. [moonberry] - 09:47am Mar 30,

When his face looked back at him from the covers of too many magazines, his dog wandered off
and skulked in the trees.

Old friends called, but there wasn't time to see them anymore.

Everything was moving so fast.

He belonged to the world.

And when, in desperation, he took that long walk around his neighbor's pasture, he turned
back halfway, unable to go on, having nowhere to go.

Peter Cammann [streamline] - 09:48am Mar 30, 2001 EST (#408 of 488)

Jay, your post and point are well taken.

A newsgroup I belong to is going through a similar problem right now. The ISP that hosts us
has backed out of a three-year lease we had and has tripled the annual fee we pay. This has
caused the host to rethink whether he wants to keep the newsgroup there, move it, or blow the
whole thing off. It looks like we'll be moving, but nothing is really certain.

The on-line economy is contracting and with it, so are a lot of the freebie services we've all
gotten used to. This is just the beginning of the trend too, so keep your eyes open for this to
happen, even on the new communities we're setting up now.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! [guy montag] - 09:54am Mar 30,
2001 EST (#409 of 488)

Thanks Peter!

Ya know, I started thinking about it this morning...

In the time that I have been posting on Pathfinder, I:

built a house

survived a miscarriage

weathered marital difficulties

got laid off

started a new job

had a baby.

And through it all I had the good people of the PF community to support and help me. You are
all wonderful, special, precious people. God bless each and every one of you.

Dammit, I think I'm gonna cry again...

Peter Cammann [streamline] - 10:08am Mar 30, 2001 EST (#410 of 488)

About the only item on your list I don't remember sharing with you was when you built your
house.

The community at PF has propped all of us up at one time or another. Hell, I even got some nice
mail and messages yesterday when I was getting over that food poisoning incident!;^) But when
the real shit has hit, I've always been warmed by how folks around here rally around to offer
their help. It's a good thing.

We've been through it all together: birth, death, and taxes. It seems odd that a group of people
who've never met each other would do that, but it happened.

Some of us have had the chance to meet up, face to face and I've been lucky enough to do that
with several posters. They're good folks, one and all.

I'm posting at Planet Pathfinder and at the Pathfinder Refugee Bar & Grill (where I'm hosting
a thread called "The Record Shop"). I hope to keep the connection to all of you alive on those
sites.

There's no reward for finding fault. [muse] - 10:10am Mar 30, 2001 EST (#411 of 488)

Greetings to all.

Guy, (not that I would ever doubt you) don't we still have one more day tomorrow....or do the
boards shut down at midnight tonight?

[pouring tea] ...I'm hoping to post one last daily yet. For now, here's the second(?) last one.

Today is: Doctor's Day (USA)

Arrivals:
Vincent van Gogh, Frankie Laine, John Astin, Warren Beatty, Eric Clapton, Robbie Coltrane,
Paul Reiser and Celine Dion

Departures:
James Cagney

Notables:
1842 Dr. Crawford W. Long first used ether as a general anesthetic.
1858 Hyman L. Lipman of Philadelphia patents his idea of attaching an eraser to the top of a
lead pencil. (shoulda made it bigger)
1867 U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward signs a treaty with Russia, purchasing Alaska for
$7,200,000; critics dub the deal "Seward's Folly." (That works out to 2cents an acre...maybe we
should call it Seward's Fortune?!?!)
1964 One of television’s best known game shows, "Jeopardy", developed by Merv Griffin, aired
on NBC-TV for the first time. The host, Art Fleming never missed one show in 2,500 programs.
1981 President Ronald Reagan is shot in the chest by a would be assassin as he walked to his
limousine outside a Washington, D.C. hotel. Press Secrectary James Brady and police officer
Thomas Delahanty and Secrect Service agent Tim MacCarthy were also wounded in the attack.

Today's thought:
"The New England Journal of Medicine reports that 9 out of 10 doctors agree that 1 out of 10
doctors is an idiot." --- Jay Leno (US comedian, talk show host )

ODDS & ENDS:
Charles Alderton, a Texan pharmacist, created a soft drink and named it after his prospective
father-in-law, Dr. Charles Kenneth Pepper. The doctor was unimpressed, so Alderton dropped
the period after the abbreviation for doctor and made his fortune with "Dr Pepper".

Well as the former lunch time cook, I'll just take my utensils and 8 burner gas stove out of here
now.

Peter Cammann [streamline] - 10:58am Mar 30, 2001 EST (#417 of 488)

Not yet, Steve! Lunchtime's coming up and I've got two great brews for the faitful.

The first is a triple malt stout. This one's thick, rich, and sweet with a chocolate finish that
makes it feel more like dessert than just something to wash your food down with.

The second selection is lighter fare, an authentic British Bitter. Unlike it's name suggests, a
true bitter is a delicate balance between maltiness and hoppy flavor. The light body makes this
a perfect warm weather ale, or "for when you're having more than one".;^)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! [guy montag] - 10:59am Mar 30,
2001 EST (#418 of 488)

Okay, more sappy maudlin stuff...

When I heard about the board's imminent demise, the only thing I could think of was
American Pie, Don McClean's tribute to the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens,
and the Big Bopper on February 3, 1959. The song asks, more or less, "What if"... I've read
analyses of the song that extrapolate the verses to events in music since that day, and I think
they're pretty right on.

Anyway, I have, with considerable help from Nessus, compiled what I'd like to call "Pathfinder
Pie". Imagine this set to the music of "American Pie".

Pathfinder Pie

A long, long time ago
I can still remember how ol’ Buckeye’s threads would make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those keyboards dance
And maybe they'd be flaming for a while
But the end of March it made me shiver
with every keystroke I delivered,
Bad news in the header,
Nothing could have stopped me deader,
I can't remember if I cried
when I read about Time’s selfish side
But something touched me deep inside,
The day Pathfinder, died.

CHORUS
So, bye, bye Mr. partisan guy
Point my browser to the bookmark but the connection died.
And them good ol' techs were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' this will be the day the boards die.
This will be the day the boards die.

Did you write the thread above?
And is your face in the book of Duh?
And Rich Pasma prattles so.
Now do you believe in click ‘n’scroll
Can Tortdog save your mortal soul?
And can you teach Bear how to type real slow?
Well, I know that you're in love with Jim
'Cause I saw your flaming war with him
You both blew off the rules
And we all fell off our stools
There was a looney leftist baiting Hank
Who questioned conrad and drew a blank
But I knew that that was in the tank....
The day Pathfinder died.

CHORUS

Now for 4 years we've been on our own
Since Marcus left for parts unknown.
But that's not how it is at Time.
And then Dave became our king and queen
But in that role he was seldom seen
And his posts they looked like yours and mine.
And when the King was lying down
Russell would up and torch the town
And on the boards they never learned.
Russell always would return
And while Fiat wrote a book on Marx
Sherrie practiced with her darts
And we all giggled in the dark
The day Pathfinder died.

CHORUS

Herb and Otis stuck it to the POTUS.
If Birdz was mean we didn't notice.
Eighty threads and climbing fast.
Speedway landed on his ass,
Ray quoted laws already passed.
And history told by Kirk was just a gas.
Now the warming earth was in review
While Regal said it wasn’t news.
We nearly pissed our pants,
When Dean did his colored dance.
And Algore tried to take the field,
The Texas Gov. refused to yield.
And we all argued if he didn’t steal,
To The day Pathfinder died.

CHORUS

Oh and there we were in cyber space,
With everyone pleading out their case,
And Y-Sam impeached Jackson once again.
So come on, Ricco’s nimble, Blue Lime’s quick,
McMurray is our nation schtick
And streamline is everybody’s friend.
Oh but when we read a spin doc’s phrase
Our answers would go on for days.
No campaign clerk could yell,
As loud or write so well.
But against the Nanny stood all of us,
The lame, the blind, the right wing nuts.
We're all bozos on this bus.
The day pathfinder died.

CHORUS

I met a girl with handle blue,
I asked about the folks we knew,
But she just smiled and turned away.
I clicked my bookmark where the board was found.
I searched and looked, and cruised around.
But the screen there said I’m sorry, page not found.
And on the net, some posters screamed
Some flamers died and the rest were steamed.
But none of them were jokin’,
The links had all been broken.
And the three that I admire most
Duh and Libby and the RR host
They’ve all gone somewhere else to post...
The day Pathfinder died.

So, bye, bye Mr. partisan guy
Point my browser to the bookmark but the connection died.
And them good ol' techs were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' this will be the day the boards die.

This will be the day the boards die.

here. I will see some of you on other boards, but it will never be quite the same. Best wishes to
you all.

Hello, everyone. Gonna miss you guys if you don't come on over to Sherrie's place. Gonna have
to look if I still have the ICQ executable file so that I can keep in touch.

OK, I found it and installed it again. My ICQ# is 113482121. </EDIT>

I've also just emailed her, letting her know that you're looking for her, okay?

Hey guys

Couldn't do the big swan song without saying goodbye.

Life is about change, it's what keeps it interesting; but nobody ever said all change is good.

I'm going to miss most of you. You don't spend as much time together as we have, over the
years, and not develop a relationship of some sort and a caring for each other.

May the blue bird of happiness always be a regular visitor to your lives.

Happy trails to you, until we meet again.... [Nessus2] - 03:05pm Mar 30, 2001 EST (#462
of 488)

Birdz:

The line says, "IF Birdz was mean, we didn't notice." Implying, I should think, that you weren't
mean. At least, I never noticed... ;-}

The original line was, "The birds took off for the fallout shelter..."

I couldn't pass up using "Birdz" instead.

I italicized it to imitate in print the vocal doubling that McLean uses on that single word in that
line.

Peter Cammann [streamline] - 03:23pm Mar 30, 2001 EST (#469 of 488)

This is really the final word from Uncle Pete. I’ve got just one word for you…and it ain’t
"plastics".

The word is "information", the only currency that really matters on the Web. When corporate
America figures this out, we’ll see a resurgence of the wild creativity we’ve experienced in
this medium over the past six years.

We’re seeing the end of an era, not just here at Pathfinder (or TOL) – but on the World Wide Web
in general. The big boom is over and now it’s time for the companies who own the various Web
sites we’ve been frequenting to find some new and creative way to fund their efforts. The
banner advertising that we’ve all despised has proven ineffective in bringing in enough cash
to keep this site going and I’ve seen much the same situation develop on several other sites and
newsgroups.

This is a little bit of history, my friends.

We’re entering another age of the Internet and I happen to be as excited about it as I was in
1995 when I first started screwing around on the Web, trying to make a few bucks for myself
and for my clients. The rules have already changed, but I think it’s going to be a while before
everyone figures out just how they work.

I’ve had more fun than I can possible describe on this thread and so I feel comfortable making
my very last post on these boards right here, with all of you, right now.

You’re a great group of folks and I’ve enjoyed debating, joking, and sharing with you all.

Lots of love,

Peter Cammann (streamline2001@hotmail.com)
