Here's a nickel in the juke box:
1..2..3..
{{Fender strat guitar lick - and a good one too}}
Toin it up....
Big wheels keep on turning
Carry me home to see my kin
Singing songs about the Southland
I miss Alabamy once again
And I think its a sin, yes
Well I heard mister Young sing about her
Well, I heard ole Neil put her down
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
A Southern man don't need him around anyhow
Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet Home Alabama
Lord, I'm coming home to you
In Birmingham they love the governor
Now we all did what we could do
Now Watergate does not bother me
Does your conscience bother you?
Tell the truth
Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet Home Alabama
Lord, I'm coming home to you
Here I come Alabama
Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers
And they've been known to pick a song or two
Lord they get me off so much
They pick me up when I'm feeling blue
Now how about you?
Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet Home Alabama

Looks like I'll be in the Wheaton area about the middle of June. Depends upon when Jep makes his annual pilgrimage to the Keys. He plans - tentatively - to hit the Keys the
first week in June. I expect that he'll hit Charleston around the middle of June so that he and Boomer can do sonme serious picking and grinning. I plan to meet him there
then and will ride back with him from there.
If Jep's plans hold, I should be in Wheaton around the first week in June. I've alerted my family, the Raifords, that I'll be there around them. Still waiting on Jep to let me
know when he plans to hit Charleston. (No sense calling Lee since he refuses to answer if his Caller ID doesn't show someone that he knows. Donnie will answer if he's at
home when the call comes in, though.)
Looking forward to seeing you and Birdz. (One of Lee's sons is a bartender in a ichi ban joint, so we should be able to have a terrific meet.)

I just back from Tacoma, WA, and I'm here to tell you that there really is no there there.
I was there on St. Pat's day, and there was NOTHING going on, anywhere. The bar I went to was nearly empty.... the bartender didn'tknow how to pout Guinness, in spite of
my quite petulant instructions. Ileft at 9:00pm and halved the clinetele...
It reminded me of El Paso - just dead.

Speaking of family never met, my grandfather evidently had a child out of wedlock before he married my grandmother.
About 10 years ago, my mother's half sister called her out of the blue and announced her presence.

Life's funny ain't it?
You never know what you have until you lose it.
Nothing makes you want to express the depth of your feelins so much as the passing of the very moment it becomes too late.
For those who go through life unhappy, life goes by too slow. For those who enjoy it, life goes by too fast.
Life is to be savored, but we only come to truly understand that when there is precious little time left to savor.
This also holds true, for all the good things in life that by virtue of the 'saying,' must, and do, come to an end.
Youth is most definitley wasted on the young.
Nothing warms like the quiet company of an old, dear friend.
If you could go around twice, things like the closing of this board and the loss of relationships nurtured here, wouldn't be nearly as devastating as it is.
Forever is an incredibly long time.

Okay, G4 in the juke box:
Oh, list to the tale of a poor Irish harper
And scorn not the strings in his old withered hand
But remember these fingers could once move more sharper
To waken the echoes of his dear native land
How I long for to muse on the days of my boyhood
Though four score and three years have fled by since then
Still it gives sweet reflections, as every young joy should
That merry-hearted boys make the best of old men
At wake or at fair I would twirl my shillelagh
And trip through the jigs with my brogues bound with straw
And all the pretty maidens from the village, the valley
Loved the bold Phelim Brady, the bard of Armagh
And when sergeant Death's cold arms shall embrace me
Oh lull me to sleep with sweet Erin Go Bragh
By the side of my Kathleen, my own love, then place me

I was in Brownsville, down at the tip of Texas, doing God knows what. Something to do with immigration, drug busts, money laundering or maybe NAFTA. Real high crimes
and misdemeanor.
It had been a dusty day, scribbling down the lies told me and I returned to the Holiday Inn a thirsty man. It's a funny thing on the border, but the beer on tap was
Budweiser. You could throw a rock south and hit a Tecate can. But Bud is the choice in the Holiday Inn.
It was cold and wet and I ordered another. It was just past happy hour and the band was warming up. It was a three-piece tejano band and some guy on synthesizer. They
played some norteno ballads, some hotter tunes, then turned it over for requests.
A thick-shouldered Hispanic guy got up from his booth, walking intently if unsteadily toward the band. His enanmorta sat demurely in the booth, smiling shyly and
sucking down Bud like it was holy water.
The band leader nodded. The guy wheeled around and headed for the booth, smiling like a man with a mission.
As the band vamped an intro, the leader stepped to the microphone and sang, "Fillin's. Nutin' more than fillin's..."
I ordered a six pack to go and went to my room. I didn't want to ruin the poor bastards chances of getting lucky by laughing hystirically.

I'll share a Bushmills with ya... and Yeats:
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem, waiting to be born?
Throw that across your chest.

Too Cool...
My favorite song... From a cult classic called Knightrider...
Sittin' here alone in my father's home,
Tomorrow I'll be gone,
I'll be on my own.
To the hills as a child I'll go,
But I'd rather be a wanderer than to never grow at all.
In my soul I saw life sleeping,
Waitin' to be born,
I'm here for weepin'.
Deep inside I can feel her dance,
Go and run to me lover, touch my innocence.
I see that life is an open road,
There'll be people stay,
And people go.
And you know it pains me so,
To think I'm just learnin' how
To let go...
Pity there's just emptiness,
tho with sorrow there comes joy,
And I woulda rather died in a hurricane,
Than to never know the storm.
See my tears, I can taste them,
as my castle walls do fall,
Oh but I would let go,
I'd never hold it all...
Castle crumble,
But I'd never hold it all......

Our cat has suddenly become fascinated with the sink in our master bathroom. She now hides at the steps as we leave in the morning, hoping to sneak into our room, and
thence to the bathroom.
Unfortunately, if the sink isn't dripping (she likes to paw at the stream), she punishes us by peeing on the bed.
It's her new game. She's seems to be ahead on points, since we shut the door before we leave, and she has managed to sneak under our bed with alarming frequency.

Set 'em up all round, Ishtar!
Please.
Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And dreamed of all the great things we would do
Those were the days my friend...
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way. La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days
Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I'd see you in the tavern
We'd smile at one another and we'd say
No more *Politics* today...
... Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me?...
Through the door there came familiar laughter
I (thought) I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh my friends we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts our dreams are still the same....
Happy trails to you, until we meet again.... [Nessus2] - 01:44pm Mar 24, 2001 EST (#163 of 1117)

Pride of Man
Turn around and go back down
Back the way you came
Can't you see that flash of fire
Ten times brighter than the day
And behold, a mighty city
Broken in the dust again
Oh, God! The pride of man
Broken in the dust again
Turn around and go back down
Back the way you came
Babylon is laid to waste
Egypt's buried in her shame
The mighty men are beaten down
The kings have fallen in the ways
Oh, God! The pride of man
Broken in the dust again
Turn around and go back down
Back down the way you came
Terror is on ever'y side
Lo, the leaders are dismayed
Those who put their faith in fire
In fire their faith shall be repaid
Oh, God! The pride of man
Broken in the dust again
(Instumental break)
Turn around and go back down
Back down the way you came
Shout a warning to the nations
That the sword of God is raised.
On Babylon that mighty city
Rich in treasure, wide in fame
It shall cause thy tower to fall
And make it be a pyre of flame
Oh, God! The pride of man
Broken in the dust again
Oh, thou that dwell on many waters
Rich in treasure, wide in fame
Bow unto a god of gold
Thy pride of might shall be thy shame
Oh, God! The pride of man
Broken in the dust again
And only God can lead the people
Back into the earth again
Bridge
Thy Holy Mountain be restored
Thy mercy on Thy people, Lord

Then there's my old friend Jim Post from my folk singing days:
Lord, I Want to Go Back to California
(Jim Post)
Last night, I dreamt I died and went to Heaven
I must admit I really was surprised
They led me through the Pearly Gates
Right down the golden streets
Everybody was busy working their ass off
Singing "Amazing Grace."
After 5,000 years, I got tired of that singing
Religious music was ringing in my sleep
It ain't no fun, you know
To own a ton of gold
All your neighbors have the same
CHORUS
Lord, I wanta go back to California
I want to hang out with the weirdos on the street
I visit Tennessee twice a year
Drink Colorado's cold Coors beer
My old lady makes pie that'll roll your socks down
Stew that'll keep coming around to visit me, Yeah!
So I went looking for a little bit o' sweet country music
But every time I found what I thought was a country music bar
There'd be a fifty voice choir singing higher and higher and (falsetto)higher
All the ladies had 1950's hairdos
All the men had flattops, "Love It Or Leave It" tattoos
Billy Graham moved into the castle next door
Oral Roberts already lived down the street
So I streaked it twice a day
Oral begged me to come in and pray
"Put your hand on the radio, feel the spirit, God needs a dollar."
Chorus
Spoken:
So, I went looking for the old, gray-headed Man With the long gray beard
And I said, "Mr. Damn,"-He dug I called him by the last name
I said, "Mr. Damn, I appreciate what you're trying to do here,
But Heaven's not for me, Hell, I'd rather be buried somewhere back on Earth's sweet soil."
He said, "Son, what makes you think you're in Heaven?
You cut down Heaven's 5,000 year-old redwood trees.
You exchanged it for silver and gold, and you let your crude oil overflow
Killing all the little bitty fish in Heaven's sea."
Chorus

More than you'll ever know
My arms long to hold you so
My life, will be in your keeping
Waking, sleeping, laughing, weeping
Longer than always is a long, long time
But far beyond forever you'll be mine
I know I never lived before
But my heart is very sure
No one else could love you more.

babbling,
I grew up in Maplewood, N.J. (near the Oranges.) It was a pretty good place to live before the advent of the two car family.
Newark used to have three main ethnic groups; Jews, blacks and Italians. When they moved out of the city, they moved to different suburbs, the Italians to Irvington, the
Jews to South Orange, and the Blacks to East Orange. My last few years in High School the Italians were starting to move farther out, to the next ring of suburbs, which was
where I lived. The Italian kids and the hippy kids were pretty different, culturally, but they did have one thing in common--they all used the word "fuckin'" alot!
I lived for a while in Ohio but it was pretty boring compared to the East Coast so I ended up moving to the D.C. area.

GW's Tips on Thread-starting
nessus: The secret of a successful thread is to start out with an eye-catching, or controversial topic, e.g, "Top 10 reasons to avoid sex with Republican women"........."Is Islam
the Religion of Satan?".........
Then (and here's the real secret)....you have to nurse your thread along.
A thread is very much like a newborn child. Right after it's born, it's unable to take care of itself. You must step in at just the right moments (perhaps after it's slipped back
to 9th or 10th place on the list) and give it a boost...a jolt.....a post that gets the discussion going again.
But no, I never believed in keeping a thread going with flames or insults. A true thread master would never stoop to that. Flames have their place, of course, but there's
always some post on the thread topic that you can respond to in a provocative way that gets the discussion going again.
You do this a few times and, before you know it, your thread is hitting the 75th post, the 100th post.......and onward and upward.
Happy trails to you, until we meet again.... [Nessus2] - 11:18am Mar 25, 2001 EST (#196 of 1117)

One way to keep alive your thread is you have to post often to your own thread. I generally start a thread and want to hear from others. Most of the times it doesn't work.
Another trick is to refer qusetions to people in particular rather than make a general post; poeple like that you pay attention to them.

people would respond to a thread with only the guy's name and no content.
It got hundreds and hundreds of posts. When it finally looked like it was dropping to the bottom, I posted that this concluded our test and that had it been a real thread we
would have already seen some content by now.

My lifelong goal is to see a thread continue after I post. I have been the champion conversation-stopper, the kiss-of-death thread-wise.

Guinness is nature's most nearly perfect food. And unlike most places in the states, we know how to pull one.
You fill the pint glass about 2/3 up, and then let is settle. Then fill it the rest of the way and allow that to settle. Takes about five minutes, if you don't mind the wait.
Buffalo wings? 16 oz of Crystal Louisiana hot sauce and a stick of butter, warmed. Wings deep fried a golden brown and then the sauce is poured over them. No breading.
Krafts Chunkey Bleu Cheese dressing and sliced carrots and celery.

Substitute some Melinda's Habanero sauce for the Crystal, but don't use just the Melinda's by itself at first. Mix it with the Crystal until you find the right heat level for you.
BTW, Crystal hot sauce is Emeril Lagasse's favorite hot sauce. Mine, too. Durkee's is also very good.

Midnight
Midnight, and I can't think of anything but you
Midnight, and your face keeps shining through
From the first light and the dawn,
You'll find me staring at your pillow
Midnight, and I can't think of anything but you
Midnight, Lord, I hate to face another day
Midnight, and I know you had to go your own way
But I can't help thinking back to the loving times we had together
Midnight, and I can't think of anything but you
Midnight, how the time lays on my mind
Midnight, and your memory stays on behind
'Cause everytime I say your gone, the echos say that I still love you
Midnight, and I can't think of anything but you

Okay ... I guess I should pay up ...
Next time you're in Boston, try a little place called Pomodoro on Hanover Street in the North End. About 20 chairs -- that's CHAIRS, not TABLES -- in the whole place, so call
ahead, especially on weekends. Two cooks, one waitress, very casual. Outstanding food!
And save room for dessert ... 'cause when you walk out of the place, you'll be face-to-face with Mike's Pastry right across the street.

I've had Tex-Mex in Dallas, El Paso, San Antonio, and Santa Fe. I've had people tell me the problem is I've never had real Mexican food, and promptly fed it to me. What I've

It sounds as if you've had every opportunity to enjoy southwest cuisine! lol... There's no accounting for taste, I suppose.
If you ever get the chance, though, try something (anything!) with authentic mole (pronounced moe-lay) sauce on it. I don't know if that's considered Tex-Mex, but it's the
acid test. If you don't absolutely fall in love at first bite with whatever's drenched in this chile and chocolate concoction then Taco Time should thank their lucky stars that
you give them a second thought. *G*
