I got Bab's bust (that always sounds vaguelyÉI dunnoÉwrong). Spagz's barstool is where it belongs. Star's lying in front of the fire, waiting to have her ears scratched.
Everything looks about right.
I think this place could use some music though. So a quarter goes into the Cyber Jukebox and we get F-11: Dexter Gordon and his great tune, 'Dexter Rides Again'.
Jeez! And the TOL boards are shutting down for good in just 12 days! Drink up, folks.

No TIME at all. The Rumpus Room is going to have to go on the road. Gypsy Caravan type thing.

Uncle Pete sez: "Fuggedaboudit!" [streamline] - 05:43pm Mar 19, 2001 EST (#3 of 488)
It strikes me as sad that this could well be the very last Rumpus Room too. GW started it a good while back, about five years ago as I recall. Star and I first stumbled in during late '96 and I still can't get that half-in-the-bag beagle to come home!

Well, everybody...drink hearty! At the end of the month - I'm sending the bar tab to Steve Case! Flug him if he can't take a joke!
Ramondo, my soon-to-be ex-collegiate friend...toss me a bottle of Glenlivet, will ya? I'll be over there in the corner packing up my memories and battle scars....

Uncle Pete sez: "Fuggedaboudit!" [streamline] - 07:00pm Mar 19, 2001 EST (#5 of 488)
I was drinking heavily (in a cyber-sorta-way) and I pondered:
Isn't it interesting that Dave's announced first day of a no TOL world is April Fools Day?

It does sort of lend an air of *disbelief* to it, doesn't it? So you suppose he's just trying to get us all to behave? Naw....Dave's not Machevelian...right?

I've been lurking on all of the "Boo-Hoo" threads. I don't feel much like posting on them just yet. I don't want to gush and that's what seems to be going on. I could use a beer though...

Whatever's your pleasure. Remember, it's on Case's tab. (I did this once in RL to Warner's, so I guess I can do it in cyberspace!)
Here's looking at ya!
Don't ask me why...I just flashed on a mental image of Turk Murphy leading us all out of here...and down to the docks.lol....

Hi folks...
Wardaddy... The pic was of the closest thing to Mulder I could find... He's (she's? How does one tell with lovebirds??) really better looking... We just got him, so no pics yet, but I'll take some this week.
Yes, we have a cage (uh, several in fact...) he's in a 18 x 24 x 18 *house style* one that he seems to like. My rehabber friend is coming over to help me clip wings in a couple days and he'll be spending most of his time in the birdie playground we got him, tho... He was hand raised but has been mostly ignored for about 6 months, so is a little jumpy... we'll see what happens then...
The folks he came from were a 2 dog, 5 cat, 3 bird family so he hasn't been able to get out... we're *bird proofing the apartment this week so he won't get into touble and going to let him out a lot...
He's got good timing, we can tell. He was quiet on the way here, til I told him he'd have to learn to sing if he lived with us... then he started sqawking..LOL and he nags if people aren't quiet by about 11:30... He's starting now...

And so Yahoo was upon us!
And, lo, it came to pass that the trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot. And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she had been called Amazon Dot Com. And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why doth thou travel far from town to town with thy goods, when thou can trade without ever leaving thy tent?"
And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, "How, dear?" And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale and they will reply telling you which hath the best price. And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)."
Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And Dot said, "There will be a lot of noise in the land." And Abraham replied, "It is my most fervent wish that this be so." And the drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had, at the top price, without ever moving from his tent.
But his success did arouse envy. A man named Maccabia did secret himself inside Abraham's drum and was accused of insider trading. And the young did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Siderites, or NERDS for short.
And, lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums, that no one noticed that the real riches were going to thedrum maker, one Brother William of Gates, who bought up every drum company in the land. And indeed did insist on making drums that would only work if you bought Brother William's drumsticks.
And Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others." And as Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or as it came to be known, 'eBay,' he said, "We need a name of a service that reflects what we are." And Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators."
"Whoopee!" said Abraham.
"No, YAHOO!" said Dot Com.

Boomer, good morning (you, too, Cooter), and glad it sounds like you might survive. My mom has had something for over a week. She finally was somewhat better yesterday. They had given her enuf antibiotics for 5 or 6 days---she had a sinus infection on top of whatever else she had. I think another few days would have knocked it better. She IS going back to the Dr. today so they can see how she is doing.
Know you are really wanting to go see that baby---hope you are able to soon! ;)

Good Mornin' one and all!!! Yes I heard about the boards, but for the moment I'm going to get my day off to a good start...that problem will still be there and I'll be better able to handle it later.

Today is: the first day of Spring (as of 8:31 am EST)
Arrivals: Ozzie Nelson, Michael Redgrave, Carl Reiner, "Mr." Fred Rogers, Hal Linden, Ted Bessell, Brian Mulroney, Bobby Orr, William Hurt, Spike Lee, Theresa Russell and Holly Hunter
Departures: Isaac Newton and Chet Huntley
Notables: 1602 The Dutch East India Company was established. During its 96-year history, it became one of the world's most powerful companies. 1964 The game show Jeopardy! debuted on NBC, with Art Fleming as the original show host. Merv Griffin created the popular show, which ran on NBC for 11 successful years before being cancelled in an effort to change the "look" of NBC's daytime lineup. It was later brought back in 1978 for a year, then back again in 1984, with Alex Trebek as show host. 1995 In Tokyo, 12 people were killed, and more than 5,500 others sickened when packages containing the poisonous gas sarin leaked on five separate subway trains. 1996 The British government said that a rare brain disease that had killed 10 people was probably linked to so-called "mad cow disease."
Today's thought: "Spring is God's way of saying, 'One more time!' " --- Robert Orben (US editor, writer)
ODDS & ENDS: SPRING: when the Sun is exactly above the equator and day and night are of equal length; also, either of the two points in the sky where the ecliptic (the Sun's annual pathway) and the celestial equator intersect. The vernal equinox, marking the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, occurs about March 21, when the Sun moves north across the celestial equator. For those of you in the Southern Hemisphere...just reverse the season... Happy Autumn to you.

Sad, A Lawyer and his Stuff
A very successful lawyer had parked his brand-new lexus in front of the office, ready to show it off to his colleagues. As he opened the door, a truck came along, and completely tore off the driver's door! The attorney immediately grabbed his cell phone, hit speed dial for 911, and had a policeman there in three minutes.
Before the cop had a chance to ask any questions, the lawyer started screaming hysterically. He had just picked up the Lexus the day before, and now it would never be the same, no matter how good a job the body shop does.
After the lawyer finally wound down from his rant, the cop shook his head in disgust and disbelief. "I can't believe how materialistic you lawyers are," he said. "You are so focused on your possessions that you don't notice anything else."
"How can you say such a thing?" he responded indignantly.
The cop replied, "You didn't even notice that your left arm is missing from the elbow down! It must have been torn off when the truck hit you."
"OH,NO!" screamed the lawyer in shock, "Where is my Rolex?!"

Hung Gar kung fu huh?
I've studied basic, kickass Karate for years now. It's very demanding and a strenuous workout.
I've been looking around for something a little less demanding, lately. I no longer have anything to prove, so I want to find something that will keep up the self-defense capabilities, is some what challenging in the workout area, but something that doesn't leave me quite a bruised, battered and twisted at the end of the week.

I think you'd like Tai Chi, Lara... you should try it... It requires the same discipline and control, isn't as demanding as Karate... and is still a form of self defense when speeded up...
It's more about overall well being than other martial arts...

Mornin'
Tea's on, basket of croissants, assorted jams, honeys and sweet butter of course...enjoy.
[sigh] I will sooo miss this place. Just a few more of these dailies left, so here goes....
Today is: Elimination of Racial Discrimination (International) also, Nau-Roz [or New Year's Day] (Baha'i), Persian New Year, Single Parent's Day (USA) and Bird Day (Iowa)
Arrivals: Johann Sebastian Bach, Benito Juarez, Florenz Ziegfeld, Timothy Dalton, Gary Oldman, Matthew Broderick and Rosie O'Donnell
Departures: Pocahontas (burial date), Robert Preston, Dean Martin jr.
Notables: 1617 Celebrated Indian princess Pocahontas was buried on this date in London. She died from small pox, as did several of her Indian companions. Major figures from the worlds of art and commerce had sought her out upon her arrival in England, including the King and Queen, who had her sit with them during a presentation of Twelfth Night. Pocahontas was in her early twenties at the time of her death, and had assumed the Christian name of Rebecca. 1788 Fire destroyed 856 buildings in New Orleans Louisiana 1857 Earthquake hits Tokyo; about 107,000 die 1917 Czar Nicholas II and his family were arrested by revolutionary forces in Russia. 1960 Almost 70 people were killed and more than 180 wounded when South African police fired on a peaceful black demonstration in Sharpeville in the Transvaal. 1961 The Beatles made their debut in an appearance at Liverpool s Cavern Club, where they became regulars in a matter of months. 1963 Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco Bay, a harsh maximum security jail which once housed gangster Al Capone, closed. 1965 Martin Luther King led the start of a 4,000-strong civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama
Today's thought: You cannot prevent the birds of sorrow from flying over your head, but you can prevent them from building nests in your hair. --- Chinese Proverb
ODDS & ENDS: In 1868 Alcatraz island was designated as a residence for military offenders. Later prisoners included rebellious Indian scouts from the Arizona territory, American soldiers fighting in the Philippines who had deserted and joined the Filipino cause in 1900, and civilians who had resisted the U.S. army in China. The first federal prisoners arrived at Alcatraz on August 11, 1934. One of its most famous inhabitants, Robert Stroud (Birdman of Alcatraz) only spent 17 of his 54 years in jail at Alcatraz. He really should have been dubbed the Birdman of Leavenworth. BTW, Alcatraz is Spanish for pelican.

lara and surferchick: The chick from Surferland is on the money.
Tai Chi is slow motion and meditative, and concentrates on generating chi, or vital energy, within your body. But Tai Chi is also a martial art and does involve kicks and various strikes.
I find that Tai Chi works well in tandem with kung fu. They have the same origin in China, and many of the moves are similar.
And you're right, lara, kick-ass karate is for young people. Us old folks don't need to kick ass any more; we should be accumulating wisdom.

[lara croft] - 10:24am Mar 21, 2001 EST (#69 of 488)
Yeah, that's it, wisdom. Wisdom over bruising and spraining important body parts. Wisdom over bending joints in directions they were never meant to go.
I can look you in the eye at the exact moment I'm kicking you in the back of the head.
Somehow that's not as important as it used to be.
Probably because increasingly it hurts me as much as it hurts you.
It never used to be that way.
Gawd, I must be getting old.
Wisdom, I think I'm getting the hang of it.

Many of us also have concealed carry permits that gives some energy and an edge. *G*

[lara croft] - 10:29am Mar 21, 2001 EST (#71 of 488)
That would also fall under the wisdom category, wouldn't it?
Lemmings are unlucky gypsies. [BARRY F SULLIVAN] - 10:31am Mar 21, 2001 EST (#72 of 488)
Right-on GW. To many candles on the next cake too. Fiji sounds good right now Spooner, lots of jobs to do outside and summer will not be here for sure untill June. Thats when the 4-engined mosquitoes arrive.
MIR comes in at 12.30 am CST Friday I hear. Will it pass over us on last orbit?
I thought for a moment you meant Mir!!
BTW Pocahontas is not buried in London. She rests in the St. Georges Parish Churchyard in Gravesend, near Dartford, Kent. The Parish paid for her casket and still have the records of the `made-to-measure' casket. She was a short, stout lady.
Moo TOL!

Mornin', Muse, Barry, Guy, Susan, Birdz, Peter, Boomer, Lara, GW, Cooter.
My main computer is hinky today, so I'll be working on it later. Have to add some software to this one so that I can do what I set out to do, run some old Virginia deed and court records through my OCR and get them off to my cousins and a couple of family researchers. I finally bought something from EBay and it paid off. A reprint of some records from seventeenth century Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Found several entries for my ancestor.
Unfortunately, there's nothing on his sister Elizabeth.

Look for some composted manure. I've used it in the past mixed with dirt and have gotten some enormous chile plants. Big yields, too. I got nearly a bushel of habaneros from four plants and nearly as many datils from four plants - and datils are much smaller than habs.

Peter Cammann [streamline] - 12:33pm Mar 21, 2001 EST (#107 of 488)
I got back from the interview about a half hour ago. This is a very big money position with lots of risk and tons of potential reward. I'm fascinated with the position, but not too sure about the guy I'd report to.
I interviewed with the president of the company for close to two hours. It reminded me of those nature films that show a hornet and a spider squaring off. We bobbed and weaved, traded barbs and came to a tense level of mutual respect. He's interested, but am I?
Too soon to tell. But then there's all that money...

Peter Cammann [streamline] - 07:49pm Mar 21, 2001 EST (#111 of 488)
I agree with you, GW. I have a lot of nagging doubts about this particular company and I know that I would far prefer to work for the firm where I went for a meeting yesterday instead. The money wouldn't be as good, but I feel a lot more comfortable with the owner, the market, and the culture there.
I have to keep my hand in with the place I interviewed at today though. I feel it's important now to make a move to a new job situation during the coming months as I have a growing uneasiness about the direction of the company where I now work. There's no real marketing plan and the owner is now going after a new market with his personal resources (cash)and he has shown no interest in cutting in the rest of the company on the deal. I think he's casting the rest of the staff to drift wherever the currents take us.
I am confident though that the company I want to work with will make an offer in the next two to three weeks. We've put together a good deal for both sides and all that's needed is for the owner to pull the trigger. He's told me he wants it to happen and I've known him for quite a number of years. He actually offered me this same job two years ago, but I turned him down then.
I'm sure glad I went on vacation a month ago. If I hadn't gotten all relaxed and sunbaked first, I'd be an emotional wreck by now. See? Fishing, rum, and good times with your ladies are very effective therapy!;^)
BTW Boomer - I'm the hornet! Buzzzzzzzzz!!!

I never knew the power of an armed woman. Perhaps had my first two wives had guns , things could have turned out better.
This gal took on a corrupt County Judge with her newspaper and had a lot of heat from outside sources. Not the Police however...they knew he was being paid off and their casses were being dismissed for small reasons. They backed her up and even let her ride along on to make sure she was safe. That is when she started to carring a heater.

Arrivals: Chico [Leonard] Marx, Louis L'Amour, Karl Malden, Ross Martin, Werner Klemperer, Marcel Marceau, Stephen Sondheim, William Shatner, Emmett Walsh, Glen Campbell, Andrew Lloyd Weber, Bob Costas, Lena Olin, Elvis Stojko and Reese Witherspoon [exhaling...]
Departures: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Michael Todd, Karl Wallenda and Walter Lantz
Notables: 1765 Britain enacted the Stamp Act to raise money from the American colonies and repealed it the following year. (It flourishes today under the USPS...hehe) 1841 Englishman Orlando Jones patented that fabulous miracle food known as corn starch. 1882 Congress outlawed polygamy...after all, having more than one mother-in-law is cruel and unusual punishment. 1895 Auguste and Louis Lumiere gave the first demonstration of motion pictures using celluloid film in Paris. 1978 Karl Wallenda, the 73-year-old patriarch of the famous "Flying Wallendas" high-wire act, fell to his death while attempting to walk a cable in Puerto Rico. 1995 The convicted murderer, known as the Long Island Railroad gunman, was sentenced to life in prison for killing six people and injuring twenty others. Dennis McCarthy, James Gorycki and Amy LoCicero Federici were three of the murdered victims. I spent the whole morning searching and could not find the other three names. My heartfelt apologies to those victims. It's so sad that the criminal's name is prominent and the innocents are forgotten. 2233 According to the official "Star Trek" biography, James T. ODDS & ENDS: The four Great Lakes??? What should have been considered one body of water, Lake Michigan-Huron with an area of 45,410 square miles, was mistakenly given two names, one for each lobe. The explorers in colonial times incorrectly believed each lobe to be a separate lake because of their great size. The Huron Lobe and the Michigan Lobe are at the same elevation and are connected by the 120-foot deep Mackinac Strait, which is just a narrowing and not a river. The flow between the two lakes can reverse, they have identical water level regimes and mean longterm behavior; that is, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are hydrologically considered one lake.

We've got a jazz birthday doubleheader today: guitarist Gerige Benson (1943) and saxophonist Bob Mover (1953).
I've been out driving since 8 this AM in the snow storm. Lotsa fun, lemme tell you. I had three very quick meetings that all related to one deal and had to put a lotta rubber on the road to accomplish it all. Too bad the roads were all covered with snow. Another foot expected before tomorrow. Then, you guessed it, I'm back on the road again - this time to Montreal.

City of Calgary plans to license beggers soon. They plan to make homeless beggers in Canada's richest City have to apply for a license and wear a label, before they can beg. No statement on what the begger fee will be. If that dosn't work tattooing their begger number on their forehead could be tried. Okay, why the hell is Guy so cheerful, you might ask... He's got 4" of water in his basement and he's losing ground hourly; his favorite political BB is shutting its doors in a little over a week; and tonight he's committed to help a friend with some seriously heavy lifting???
Well, above and beyond all I've just posted,
IT'S FRIDAY!!!

Today's Coffee is a big steamin' stainless steel carafe of Guy's Truckstop Coffee. This is coffee the likes of which haven't been seen since the early 1950s, right before the FDA started cracking down on artificial stimulants. Hmmmm...
Enjoy!

< streamline "Parting thoughts, from fellow posters to each other" 3/23/01 8:32am >
I'll be lurking a good bit, but outside of the Rumpus Room, I doubt I'll be posting all that much during the coming week.
I'm heading to Montreal later this morning. Well, that is if the snow lets up some. We got completely covered last night and I have to figure we got another foot and a half on top of all the other white crap that was already on the ground. The roads are very sloppy right now, but with luck I'll be able to navigate my way north in a few hours.
Good morning to Boomer and Barry too!

ON TO THE DAILIES.....
Today is: World Meteorological Day (I think we should call it Henny Penny Day) also: Liberty Day (USA), Memorial Day (Bolivia) and Pakistan Day
Arrivals: Fanny Farmer, Joan Crawford, Werner von Braun, Marty Allen, Rick Ocasek, Louie Anderson, Richard Greico and Keri Russell
Departures: Peter Lorre
Notables: 1775 Patrick Henry told the Virginia Convention "Give me liberty, or give me death!" 1919 Benito Mussolini founded his own party in Italy, the Fasci di Combattimento. 1933 The German parliament passed the Enabling Bill, giving Adolf Hitler and the Nazis the dictatorial powers they had been seeking. 1940 "Truth or Consequences" was first heard on radio. The Ralph Edwards produced program was hosted by Mr. Edwards before he discovered a young announcer named Bob Barker. 1956 Under its new constitution Pakistan became an Islamic republic. 1989 An asteroid came within 500,000 miles of hitting Earth. 1997 Heaven's gate suicides leave 39 dead in California. 1997 Five dead bodies are found arranged in a cross formation at the burned Quebec home of Didier Queze. They were members of the Solar Temple cult who in 1994 to 1996 had totalled 69 suicides in Europe and North America. 2001 The space station Mir plunged through the atmosphere erupting into a fireball before landing in the South Pacific. It now holds the dubious distinction of being the largest piece of junk ever to fall to Earth.

ODDS & ENDS: The bubbles in coffee can tell you what the day s weather will be. Stare at your coffee before adding milk. If the bubbles float toward the rim of the cup, the pressure is low and clouds and stormy weather can be expected. If the bubbles float to the center, the pressure is high and fair weather can be expected. I don't think this works with Guy's coffee!?!?!

Actually, the flooding, while a pain in the ass, caused extremely little damage. We had a much worse flood last April -- we were NOT expecting to have 6" of water in our basement then...
This time, we were prepared -- everything in the basement was either 12" up on plastic shelving or stored in large plastic totes...
Barry
Where's that water coming from Guy?
Basement stairs. Last April we had a massive flood that resulted from an infestation of groundhogs. Our house has a cast concrete stairway leading out of the basement. When the foundation for the house is poured, there's a hole there for the stairs. This concrete stair unit is lowered into place, sealed with a rubber gasket, then bolted onto the foundation.
Well, the groundhogs decided that the concrete stair unit was the perfect roof for their burrow... They dug a large hole directly under the basement stairs. When we got heavy spring rains, the water just poured in up against the foundation and stayed there. Eventually, a hole was worn through the rubber gasket sealing the concrete stairs to the foundation of the house. And viola! We have water in our basement.
I filled in the hole last year, but the goddamn rodents came back. The worst part is, Mrs. Guy thinks the little fekkers are "cute" and won't let me shoot them... :(
Needless to say, we've got more water in our basement...
Guy's solution? Shoot the mo-fo groundhogs.
Anyone got a good recipe for woodchuck? >:)
Coffee a bit crunchy this morning!
Yeah, I mix crushed-up Vivarin in with the coffee grounds...
Mornin' Muse!
Sorry to hear about the flooding Guy...hope it doesn't do too much damage. You should change your nic to Noah. hehe
Thanks... As I posted above, the damage was in fact minimal.

You all have a great weekend. I'll likely check back in here on Sunday. I've got one last batch of homebrew to bottle and then I'm shutting down the brewroom in my home until August (except for storage, of course). Actually, it's a pretty common design from what I've seen... It's cheaper than building the basement stairs into the foundation, that's why it's so popular...

Raymondo I'll have the usual double--no make that a triple Stoli. Yes, I realize it's 7:30 in the morning here on the West Coast, Raymundo! I saw Dave's notice about the boards shutting down a few days ago and have been wracking my brain to come up with something profound to post, and a triple Stoli should help.
I thought about making some meaningful thread to say goodbye to this board and all the amazing, wonderful, brilliant and hilarious nuts I've met here, but in the end I opted to return to the Politics boozer where I first begin my foray into TOL 'Politics' board.
I guess I shouldn't have much trouble transitioning to Davka's Refugee Board--I came here as a refugee of TOL's 100 board. I first tested the waters flaming babbette and joining the Irish in some absurd flame topics with NO intention of ever really getting involved with this board.
But one evening early on I dropped in here at the RR and ran into Sherrie and Lara and I think maybe Robbie was there that night too, if not that night she was here shortly thereafter. I was hooked! BTW: where the hell is Robbie????
After that I found myself whiling away hours on end here and eventually venturing out into the polical wars too. What I found was the most astute, witty, intelligent and completely crazed collection of miscreats anywhere on the WWW (of course with one or 2 notable exceptions).
I'm surprised I still have my original monitor from all the coffee, water, chardonnay etc, I sprayed it with while reading the treads on this board. I've almost choked to death a thousand times laughing at the brilliantly hilarious posts or from frothing at the mouth when delving into a particularily heated flamewar.
And I have to say that even with the posters I most violently disagreed with (again with 1 or 2 notable exceptions), they were still highly intelligent, articulate and most importantly entertaining!
And what can I say about our host here, Guy, you kept me in good chardonnay, double Stoli's, great conversation and you offered a shelter from the polical and the BillR storms. We LOVE you man! I understand you intend to setup shop in the new hood.... DON'T count on me to help with the move--I got stuck with that chore one too many times before. And if Lara and Rico are gonna help, make sure you hide painless first. I remember the time we almost lost the bust of Babs!
I've got to work today, Raymondo, but please have another double-er-triple waiting for me when I get back--these are maudlin times.

Corey's Comin' Harry chapin
Old John Joseph was a man with two first names They left him in the railroad yard when they took away the trains And only one run a week comes on roarin' down that line So all he"s got to worry 'bout is time He sits in the brake house, his hands out to the fire Movin' through his memories of love and desire Telling me the stories of the glories of his past But he always saves the story of his Corey for the last
CHORUS: And he says: "My Corey's coming. No more sad stories coming. My midnight, moonlight, morning glory's coming Aren't you, girl? And like I told you, When she holds you, She enfolds you in her world.
I'd come by in the evening to find out where he'd been And he'd say, "Come on, sit down kid, where shall I begin? And I'd say, "You know my favorite, though you know I like the rest But I love the way you tell me of your Corey the best And I'd hear his life long love recreated by his tongue He'd turn back the years, she'd be forever young. Though the other stories changed as they rolled through his head He'd say the same words 'bout Corey just before he went to bed And then he'd send me away but he'd be smiling as he said--CHORUS
I was quite surprised to find out all the places that he knew So I asked the townsfolk if his stories were true Well they said "Old John was born here, he's lived here all his life Never had a woman, let alone a wife. And very soon you'll find (out) as you check around, That no one named Corey's ever lived in this town." So I chided the old man about the truth that I had heard. "Well," he smiled and said, "Reality is only just a word."--CHORUS
I came by one evening but he did not hear my shout. I looked in the window and I saw the fire was out. When he did not wake up, I forced in the door. And I found that old John Joseph would tell stories no more.
BRIDGE: (Slow dirge, minor chord progression) There was the scene at the graveyard, just three of us were there It was me and the grave digger and we heard the parson's prayer. He said, "We need not grieve for this man for we know that God cares
Well, they threw the cold dirt over him, and left me on my own. When at last I looked up, I saw I was not alone. Standing there in silence with a shawl around her head Was a beautiful young woman, I remember what she said: "Is that John Joseph there?" I nodded my head yes. That brought a soft smile from her, she said, "It's time he got some rest." So I said, "If you're a relative, he had a peaceful end." She said, "My name is Corey, you can say I'm just a friend."--CHORUS
So that's the old man's story, I'm glad you came tonight You see, a broken down old railroad yard sure makes a lonely sight You may wonder why a young man would work out here alone. Well, the job pays enough to keep some flesh on my bones And I confess that I get to missing the old man a bit Yes, there's one other reason I guess I could admit.--CHORUS

Good morning, Jay. Hi, Natrona.
Things are always a little slow on Sunday AM and what with the gradual migration of posters to new sites - even more so on this, the last full weekend of TOL.
I've got a batch of ale to bottle this morning. Then I'm shutting down production ntil late August. I'll have put up somewhere around 17-18 cases for the spring/summer!
Anyway, it's a cool but gorgeous day here in the mountains. I was in Montreal the past couple days, visiting friends and enjoying myself with my ladies. We had a fabulous dim sum brunch yesterday in Chinatown and did some shopping in Little Italy before heading back.
Coffee's brewing and I've got projects to do. I'll check back later today.

Not particularly. I know that my name is on the list to attend the SETAC conference. The conference runs from Sunday to Thursday, so most likely I'll be in Baltimore the whole week. I'll have to get the dates later, though... It's like the first or second week of November, I know that.

I take a 9-month sabbatical from the Board (to help write a huge report no one will ever read) and Bam! learn just a couple of days ago that the TL Board will probably be history as of next Saturday! I can't believe it and am SO sorry, because I have looked forward to rejoining you as soon as possible. To paraphrase WR, "I never met a man (or lady) in the Rumpus Room that I didn't like." So, I am going to miss you all, and if you should light in some other place, will you please e-mail me HnbLecterMD@aol.com and let me know so I can re-join you later. In the meantime, here's a little W.C. Fields quote I saw in the bar at Mary Mahoney's in Biloxi (Cooter & War Daddy have probably been there many times the eatery is famous down in those parts)!
"Nobody minds a man having a morning eye-opener, and it's OK to have a bracer around 10 AM and also a couple of drinks before lunch, and any man needs a few beers on a hot afternoon to keep himself healthy (or at least happy) and, of course, almost everyone drinks during the cocktail hour. And a man can't really be criticized for having wine with his dinner, a liqueur afterwards and a highball or two in the evening. BUT THIS DAMNED BUSINESS OF SIP, SIP, SIP ALL DAY LONG HAS GOT TO STOP!!"

Thanks, D.R.
I'm always looking for new recipes.
I bottled a couple cases of "Apple Pie Ale" today. It's a Bavarian Wheat Ale, flavored with apples and cinnamon. Should be ready to drink around Memorial Day, maybe a week or so earlier.
I tried an Espresso Stout I bottled in early February and a Scotch Ale I put up in late January tonight. The stout is tremendous, but the Scotch Ale could sit another couple weeks.

It's Monday of the final week here at TOL. I think this is going to be a bumpy week, folks - so fasten your seatbelts.
I've taken the liberty of brewing up some very strong Yaucono, a favorite brew of mine from Purto Rico. It's a great coffee to help you get kick-started when you just want to pull the covers over your head and hide. Should suit Monday morning perfectly!

I also agree that this is going to be a bumpy week, but I would not miss it for the world...

I'm wondering whether the whole site will just disappear into the void, or whether it'll stay up but be inert.
I also wonder why kids wake up so damned early.
My daughter was up at 6 this morning (which isn't so bad, given that she has school today). But why the hell she feels the need to rise at 6:30 on weekend mornings is beyond me.

Peter
I'm wondering whether the whole site will just disappear into the void, or whether it'll stay up but be inert.
Most likely it'll just give that "Post with no data" page for anything you try to access. Either that or "File Not Found" (Say it like the old guy in that commercial...)
I also wonder why kids wake up so damned early.
If you ever figure this out, let me know. I'll be your agent...
My daughter was up at 6 this morning (which isn't so bad, given that she has school today). But why the hell she feels the need to rise at 6:30 on weekend mornings is beyond me.
Because that's when the cartoons start?
Don't worry, Peter. As many have told me, just wait until (s)he's a teenager. Then they don't rise before noon...

I didn't make it online yesterday. Some buds and I decided to sit in the left field lounge area at the Ole Miss baseball stadium instead of our box seats. It's on the side of a hill behind the right and left field walls, and has ledges and grills.
We brought our own grill, along with some cold barley sodas and Bloody Marys. The Rebs beat Alabumma 11-9 to complete a 3 game sweep over the Mad Elephants. A great time was had by all. *G*

T-minus 6 days and counting....[very sad sigh]
Greetings to all...[pouring tea]...this is our final week. Whatever will I do with all this information????
Here goes...
This week: National Sleep Awareness Week and American Chocolate Week
Today is: Islamic New Year, Arbor Day (Spain), Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianole Day (Hawaii), Seward's Day (Alaska)
Notables: 1895 King Alfonso plants pine sapling in Madrid, starts Spain's Arbor Day. 1913 Dayton, Ohio almost destroyed when Scioto, Miami, & Muskingum Rivers reach flood stage simultaneously. More than 700 people would lose their lives during the flood. 1953 Dr. Jonas Salk announces that he has successfully tested a vaccine against the crippling disease polio. 1956 Medic Alert Foundation forms. 1971 East Pakistan proclaimed its independence, and changed its name to Bangladesh.
Today's thought: "People who say they sleep like a baby usually don't have one." --- Leo Burke (English novelist, critic)
ODDS & ENDS: Some snipits on sleep Doctors have identified more than 100 sleep disorders, but the one most people suffer from is simply not taking the time to get enough sleep. According to a 1999 survey conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, of those people who snore, 19 percent snore so loudly that they can be heard through a closed door. The average person who stops smoking requires one hour less sleep a night. Early mattresses were filled with straw and held up with a rope stretched across the bed frame. If the rope was tight, sleep was comfortable. Hence the phrase, "sleep tight." The act or habit of talking while asleep is called "somniloquy." Your brain is more active sleeping than it is watching TV

Well, it's the very first UnMonday of the week... I'm (very slowly) starting to come to grips with both the demise of Pathfinder as we know it and my ever-growing sleep debt... :O
Mornin' firecracker!

I haven't tried that board, but there are a couple other boards out there (linked rather frequently) that are well worth checking out.
Mornin' MsR!

Ahhhhhhhh, someone finally discovered the coffee timer... Thank goodness!

The "sleep debt"...
That's an interesting thingy, Jay. I found that before Grace was born that I couldn't get by on less than seven hours of sleep a night. Now six is closer to average and I seem to function perfectly well. I still crave more sleep, I just find that I don't need it though.

T-minus 5 and counting.
Trying to keep a stiff upper lip around here is tough! [pouring tea] I don't like breaking the routine...
Today is: Happy Birthday Day (sort of)
Arrivals: Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, Henry Royce, Patty Smith Hill, Gloria Swanson, Sarah Vaughan, David Janssen, Judy Carne, Cale Yarborough, Michael York, Tom Sullivan and Mariah Carey
Departures: Yuri Gagarin (in a plane crash of all things!)
Notables: 1964 One of the largest quakes in North America strikes 80 miles east of Anchorage, Alaska. The seismic wave that followed was 50 feet high and traveled 8,445 miles at 450 miles per hour. More than100 people died and damage was estimated at $500 million. 1977 582 people were killed when two Boeing 747 planes collide on a runway in the Canary Island of Tenerife, making this the worst aviation disaster in history. 1980 Mount St. Helens in Washington state becomes active after 123 years. 1980 147 people died when the Alexander Kielland, a floating platform for off-duty oil workers, capsized in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. 1996 The European Commission banned the sale of British beef and cattle to the rest of the world because of "mad cow" disease
Today's thought: The smart husband says, "How do you expect me to remember your birthday when you never look any older?"
ODDS & ENDS: Two sisters, Mildred Hill, a teacher at the Louisville, Kentucky Experimental Kindergarten, and Dr. Patty Hill, the principal of the same school, together wrote a song for the children, entitled "Good Morning to All." The sisters published the song in a collection entitled "Song Stories of the Kindergarten" in 1893. Thirty-one years later, after Dr. Patty Hill became the head of the Department of Kindergarten Education at Columbia University's Teacher College, a gentleman by the name of Robert H. Coleman published the song, without the sisters' permission and he took the liberty of adding a second verse, the familiar "Happy Birthday to You." Mr. Coleman's addition of the second verse popularized the song and, eventually, the sisters' original first verse disappeared.
After Mildred died in 1916, Patty, together with a third sister named Jessica, sprang into action and took Mr. Coleman to court. In court, they proved that they, indeed, owned the melody. Because the family legally owns the song, it is entitled to royalties from it, whenever it is sung for commercial purposes. Warner Communications paid $28 million for the copyright to the song "Happy Birthday".

That's not the first time I've heard that, Peter -- that one adjusts to the lesser amount of sleep one gets when there's a child involved. For instance, my wife has been able to get by on only 10 hours of sleep a day instead of her usual 12... (kidding... thank God she doesn't visit these boards...)

One of the most exciting events I ever experienced was a Jazz Concert at Carnegie Hall with Sarah Vaughan and Billy Daniels. We had to buy a box cause the cheap seats were gone.(We were HS seniors). Fortunately, we are having sunshine today---supposed to be rainy tomorrow and Thursday, but I am glad to see the sunshine today. Took Mom to the Dr. and it wore her out, but I am probably going to make her get out again later today. I think I will take her out for a drive. The bronchitis seems to be clearing up, but she has no energy since she has had no appetite, and hasn't felt like moving. Since I have these days off, maybe I can get her up and going again (and WE don't have to go to the Dr. again for a month). ;)

Afternoon, Jay
Fauforde
Saw you over on the new refugee board, but you weren't online at the time.
Well, the Vancouver Grizzlies of the NBA have announced that they are coming to Memphis next year. A caller to the local afternoon talk show on WREC-AM observed that she wished they would stay away since crime is already so high in Memphis.
Another NBA team is talking about coming to Memphis, too.
The problem is, only Fred Smith, the FedEx owner, and some other local businesses want them to come so that Smith can pay to name the new arena that the taxpayers will have to build. Smith's payment goes to the team owner not to the county/city to pay for the damned thing. When Autozone named the stadium for the Memphis Redbirds, they built it, too. The city donated the land rent-free.

Wardaddy, you ought to read the FedEx pilots' board, in which they're yipping about their salaries versus what Fred is paying to bring in the Grizzlies.
They're not happy.

When a man's down, kick him! [wardaddy] - 04:50pm Mar 27, 2001 EST (#249 of 488)
Robbie
Smith has promised the Grizzlies' owner $100,000,000.00 over twenty years. He's paid about twice that to have one of the bowl games named after FedEx.
They should be p**sed off.
To top it all off, the Charlotte, NC, NBA team may come to Memphis, too. They'll be playing in the Pyramid where the University of Memphis basketball team plays its games. There'll be wall-to-wall backetball until the new arena is finished.
Memphis property taxes are already so high that people are moving to Mississippi in droves.

When you go to the whisky store, look for a southeastern Australian chardonnay named Stonehaven. I just opened a bottle that I got at the whisky store last night and it's terrific. Very soft and creamy. Cheap, too. Nine-fifty a bottle here, and Mississippi's high for alcohol. You'll love it. very, very tasty.

I poated a link to you on Sherrie;s board. It has the address of Mo Hotta, Mo Betta, a source for hot sauces and the like.
I'll see if I can find it again.
<EDIT>
<url>http://www.mohotta.com/index2.html</url>
Here'tis. Look for Melinda's XXXXXTra Hot Habanero sauce. It's made with Rde Savina habaneros. They measure 400,000SCUs on the heat scale while ordinary habs only get to 3000,000SCUs. Melnida's makes Hot Extra Hot, XXtra Hot, XXXtra Hot, XXXXtra Hot and the XXXXXtra Hot Savins hot sauce. Makes Tabasco look like KoolAid.

Today's Jazz Birthday Boy is cornet player Thad Jones. Thad was one of the three famous Jones brothers (the other two being Hank and Elvin). He is best known for his classic recordings with saxophonist Sonny Rollins in the 1960s and drummer Mel Lewis during the 1970s - but Jones was also an excellent composer and bandleader in his own right. A listen of his music today is definitely in line!

Just testing my recipes for crab cakes right now. Tried Emeril's recipe from FoodTV, but it's entirelyy too complicated.
I'm getting caight up on the last 70 posts right now, but I'll put the other recipe that I have. Very simple, but it looks good. I'll even use some of that sissy Maryland seasoning, you know, the one that you use to really ruin some perfectly good shrimp, Old Bay?

TASTE SHOW #TS4623
MAMA TUCKER'S CRAB CAKES
1 pound fresh lump crabmeat, picked over for shells and cartilage 1 egg 2 tablespoons Duke's mayonnaise 3 slices white bread (such as Wonder), crusts removed and cut in 1-inch chunks 1 1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce, plus extra for serving 1 heaping teaspoon honey mustard, plus extra for serving 1/2 teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning Peanut oil and lard, for deep-frying
Place crabmeat in a large bowl. In a small bowl whisk together egg, mayonnaise, bread, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and seasoning; pour over crabmeat and mix well. Pat one handful of crabmeat mixture into a cake; this amount should make 5 cakes. In a large cast-iron skillet, heat about 1-inch oil and lard over medium-high heat. Add crab cakes and fry 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until well-browned. Remove crab cakes and drain on paper towels. Serve with Worcestershire sauce and honey mustard, if desired. Yield: 5 Crab Cakes
Ixnay on the honey mustard, though. I'm subbing Creole mustard for it.
